kmart dresserRidgewood recently recalled their Kmart exclusive dressers over concerns that the furniture can tip over onto children.

On Oct. 3, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that Ridgewood Industries Inc. would be recalling their Belmont four drawer dressers due to tip over concerns.

According to the CPSC, the dressers are “unstable” and, if they are not anchored to the wall, they can pose a tip over and entrapment hazard. This can reportedly result in death or injuries to children. No incidences were reported, but the recall is proceeding over the potential risks.

Additionally, the Belmont dressers which are over 30 inches tall reportedly do not comply with voluntary standards set by the U.S.

The recalled dressers were sold exclusively at Kmart stores between April 2013 and November 2018. They feature four drawers and came in two sizes and four colors. Around 1 million units are affected by the recall. The following models are included:

Model Number Dimensions Color
5933015K 29-3/4”H x 27-5/8”W x 15-5/8”D White

The CPSC recommends that consumers immediately stop using the recalled dressers if they are not properly anchored to the wall and place the dressers in an area where children cannot access them.

Instead of completely recalling the dressers, Ridgewood is providing a free anchoring kit including a wall strap. Consumers can have this sent to them free of charge for them to install themselves or they can request a one time, free in-home installation of the anchoring kit.

If consumers have further questions about the recall, they can contact Ridgewood at 888-222-7460 Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT. Consumers can also fill out a form on the manufacturer’s website.

Tip-over accidents can result in tragic injuries and deaths. Children often try to scale the front of their dressers. If the dresser is not designed to withstand weight on extended drawers, the furniture piece can tip-over onto the child. This can result in them being crushed, suffocated, and otherwise injured or killed.

According to Consumer Reports, tip-over incidents are an “epidemic” in the United States. Every 17 minutes, someone is injured by some sort of tip-over accident involving furniture, televisions, or appliances. Dressers reportedly account for at least 11 percent of furniture tip-over injuries and a significant number of deaths.

To counteract the risks of tip-over injuries, the furniture industry operates with voluntary tip-over testing standards. Under these standards, dressers taller than 30 inches should be able to remain upright even with 50 pound of weight hanging from an open drawer. Unfortunately, these standards are voluntary – meaning that manufacturers aren’t required to meet the standard or conduct testing to ensure customer safety.
