Premera-logoAccording to popular Pacific Northwest health insurer Premera Blue Cross, the company’s systems were hacked, exposing sensitive, personal information of about 11 million Premera consumers such as clinical data and bank accounts.

While Premera claims they detected the data breach at the end of January 2015, there is evidence that the initial Premera data breach occurred in May 2014.

Some information that may have been exposed during the Premera data breach includes name, street addresses, birthdays, telephone numbers, Social Security numbers, member ID numbers, email addresses, medical claims and clinical information as well as bank account information.

In light of the data breach and the potential damages incurred by Premera consumers, many are choosing to pursue Premera Blue Cross data breach lawsuits and class action lawsuits.

Background on Premera Data Breach

Premera is a health insurance company based in Washington state that says a data breach exposed important consumer information via paid insurance claims. Some employer clients of Premera include Microsoft Corp. and Starbucks Corp., meaning that these and other companies may also have been affected by the Premera data breach.

Investigators are still attempting to discover the source of the Premera data breach. However, it has been noted that none of its customers’ personal data accessed during the Premera data breach and a related Anthem data breach have shown up in internet black markets.

A Premera spokesperson states that the company cannot speak about the origins of this data breach, as it is currently under FBI investigation, though the company claims that so far “there is no evidence that any data was removed from the system and no evidence any data was used inappropriately.”

Additionally, although Premera’s data is encrypted, it is possible that the hackers responsible for the data breach gained unauthorized access to Premera’s systems, which would have allowed the hackers to access current and former Premera consumers’ personal information dating back to 2002. Premera vendors and employees’ personal information may also have been compromised during the May 2014 data breach.
