pressure cooker explosion malfunctionAnother lawsuit has been filed because a consumer suffered power pressure cooker burns.

Plaintiff Tawndra H. alleges that her Tristar Power Pressure Cooker XL exploded and left her with severe, disfiguring burns from the hot food and liquid that burst forth in December 2016, shortly after she bought the kitchen device.

Power pressure cooker burns can affect large areas of the body when the device’s lid explodes off the top.

Tawndra alleges her pressure cooker “was defective and unreasonably dangerous” because the product did not include warnings that the device “could explode despite being unplugged, properly vented, and opened without force.”

All of the power pressure cookers work by keeping steam in a sealed chamber where the pressure can reach up to 15 pounds per square inch. Temperatures of the contents can reach 250 degrees, allowing the food to rapidly cook.

Back in the 1970s, stovetop pressure cookers were popular, and the temperature was regulated by the stove element’s heat setting. The new models are self-contained electric mechanisms that house their own heating elements, possibly keeping the contents hotter for a longer period of time.

Reasons for Power Pressure Cooker Burns

Consumers have alleged that steam escapes from unexpected breaks in a pressure cooker’s seal, causing severe burns.

Faulty valves that don’t securely seal the lid upon lock down allegedly lead to the lids exploding when the temperature and pressure reach a certain point. Even some devices that promote “safety lock lids” that are intended to keep the lid from opening prior to full depressurization inside the device have reportedly failed.

Power Pressure Cooker Burns Lead to Lawsuits

A number of pressure cooker manufacturers are facing lawsuits by consumers alleging they have suffered serious injuries from faulty kitchen devices.

Tristar pressure cookers are the subject of a class action lawsuit filed in June 2017. Other brands, including the Elite Bistro, currently are under investigation.

The Elite Bistro Pressure Cooker is the focus of a current investigation because of reports of similar explosions and the device not working properly. Made by Maxi-Matic and sold on the Home Shopping network, some users allege the Elite Bistro is defective and can lead to unexpected explosions.

If you bought an Elite Bistro pressure cooker in 2015 or earlier from the Home Shopping Network and experienced power pressure cooker burns or other mishaps because of the kitchen device’s failure, you may be eligible to participate in a pressure cooker class action lawsuit against Maxi-Matic. Successful claims may provide compensation for property damage, medical expenses, and pain and suffering.

The Power Pressure Cooker Burns Lawsuit is Case No. 2:17-cv-02869-GMN-PAL in the U.S. District Court for the District of Nevada.
