Forever chemicals class action lawsuit alleges contaminated wells

Reese Air Force Base, located in Lubbock, Texas, is responsible for leeching PFAS and other “forever chemicals” into area wells, alleges a new class action filed by community members.

According to the complaint, various hazardous chemicals have seeped into the ground water, contaminating more than 500 wells in the area. These wells are the primary source of water for residents of the community. The class action lawsuit contends that, in addition to increasing the risk of severe health effects, the contamination has lowered property values in the area.

The plaintiffs name the makers of these toxic chemicals who supplied the Air Force Base for decades as defendants.

The class action lawsuit points to testing that has revealed elevated levels of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and/or additional polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the area. As a result, say the plaintiffs, the Air Force base has installed 220 water filtration systems in homes that use private wells in the area.

Forever Chemicals Present Lasting Harm

The plaintiffs say that their contaminated groundwater contains chemicals from substances used at Reese Air Force Base, including aqueous firefighting foams, or AFFF. AFFF contains perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and PFOA, alleges the complaint, substances known to cause several health conditions.

Specifically, the class action lawsuit says that the chemicals found in Lubbock groundwater have been linked to certain cancers, liver and immune system disorders, ulcerative colitis, and hormone imbalances. Studies have also shown that exposure to these chemicals can also cause severe harm to children, including long term effects on cognitive and behavioral development, immune disorders, and cholesterol levels. In addition, exposure can lead to low birth weight in babies, alleges the complaint.

According to a 2020 study by the Environmental Working Group, PFAS poses a severe threat to drinking water safety. In reaching this conclusion, researchers warned that communities face the burden of removing these chemicals from their water and that immediate action should be taken.

The class action lawsuit has been filed in federal court in South Carolina, joining larger multidistrict litigation over AFFF.

I was at Reese AFB mid 80s to early 90s. I worked in the sound suppressor area to run up jet engines. the small room we controlled out of was put out of commission and new was built, when it came down to getting rid off the old buildings, a full blown hazmat contractor came in with suits and covered the buildings, I asked what’s up? They said the units where lined with asbestos to damper sound! We ate our lunch in those small units and routinely wiped dust off the table. Its awful they knew the situation.
