Norton Upgrade Class Action Settlement
By Mike Holter
Symantec Corporation has reached a class action lawsuit settlement over allegations it improperly charged customers for the automatic renewal of a prior Norton software subscription after they purchased another Norton product. If you upgraded or renewed your Norton antivirus software since October 1, 2005, you could get a $10 cash refund or two-month Norton subscription extension from the Norton upgrade class action settlement. No proof of purchase necessary.
The Norton upgrade settlement will resolve a 2008 class action lawsuit, titled Marolda v. Symantec Corp., that alleges Symantec’s automatic renewal program for Norton anti-virus subscriptions was improper because it did not disclose to customers that they needed to cancel the automatic renewal if an upgrade product was purchased.
Symantec denies any wrongdoing, but has agreed to a class action lawsuit settlement to resolve the litigation.
Class Members of the Norton class action settlement include all persons in the United States (including individuals, companies, government entities and all other entities) who, between October 1, 2005 and May 23, 2012:
* purchased one of the following Norton products, and
* enrolled in Norton’s automatic renewal service for that products, and
* purchased (or renewed) a second Eligible Product either during the term of your subscription to the first Eligible Product or within 60 days after being charged an automatic renewal charge for that first Eligible Product, and
* installed the second Eligible Product on the same computer as the first Eligible Product, and
* have not received a refund of the automatic renewal charge.
All versions of the following Symantec software products are included in the class action lawsuit settlement:
Norton AntiVirus
Norton Internet Security
Norton 360
Norton Personal Firewall
Norton SystemWorks
Class Members that submit valid claim forms by the deadline of May 6, 2013, will receive one of the following benefits from the Norton settlement:
No Proof-of-Purchase Claim
If you submit a No Proof-of-Purchase Claim you are not required to prove your Norton purchases — the claim is based on your knowledge and recollection.
Each Settlement Class Member who submits a valid No-Proof-of-Purchase Claim is eligible to receive their choice of either:
* a $10 cash refund, or
* a two-month extension to their existing Norton subscription.
Proof-of-Purchase Claim
Proof-of-Purchase Claims require documentation from you to prove your Norton purchases.
Each Settlement Class Member who submits a valid Proof-of-Purchase Claim is eligible to receive their choice of either of the following for each documented Eligible Transaction:
* a $10 cash refund, or
* a two-month extension to their existing Norton subscription.

I bought 360 with a new computer. I was supposed to get a $50 rebate, but it never arrived. It came with an anti malware guaranty and an 800 number. One month later I was attacked by a Trojan. The Norton 800 number offered to fix for $100 and promised another guaranty. I went elsewhere for my fix. That was my last Norton purchase and I made sure my friends all knew why.
hard drive crashed had to back up whole system
caused my hard drive to crash ????so had to get new hard dive and back up whole system !!!!
i was downloading my new antivirus program and locked up my computer as if i got some kind’a mallware lock out can you explain this and had to get new hard drive and backup my whole system !!!not a fun time especialy at tax time thought i’d never get back on line ????
I installed the Update and it was corrupted, so had to uninstall and then went to Best Buy and Purchased a new copy, it to was bad, so had to take the copy back. I then exchanged it for a new copy. I have had nothing but problems with Norton, I have since uninstalled and purchased yet another Protection Soft Ware.
I upgraded a version in 2009 and it uninstalled my “”GO Back “”protection I and lost my entire stimuli for a graduate thesis project. Bad Product, I also am trying to get to the refund site and my current antivirus software, and it labels it too high of a threat level.
not only that i try to get rid of Norton and its turn into a virus norton is spyware
Have Norton Symantec installed in my computer now and have had in the past.
Like Doreen above, support was non-existent. As a matter of fact, my desk top was rendered non-usable, even though renewal was purchased, because an additional upgrade was not purchased as well. Could not log in or get to any programs. I did not know that the automatic renewal program from Symantec selected a program at a higher cost for “better upgrade” and did so, without my consent prior to the amount being deducted from my checking account.
I have purchased this protection and to come to find out they have not giving me the support that I had requested. I have been getting feedback that my computer is at risk and for a while my computer was affected with many things that I do not know what they have encounter with my files etc.
