A group of cancer patients and their family members have filed a lawsuit against Monsanto, alleging that they were diagnosed with lymphoma from Roundup use.
Plaintiffs involved in the suit come from all across the United States, from California to Pennsylvania. Most of the plaintiffs allege that they themselves developed lymphoma from Roundup use, but others are their spouses filing for loss of consortium, and some are family members of cancer patients who have already passed away.
Most of these plaintiffs began using Roundup in the 1980s or 1990s. For many of them, their lymphoma from Roundup wasn’t diagnosed until around the year 2000. In general, the time between the beginning of Roundup use and diagnosis with lymphoma was between 10 and 30 years. This is in keeping with what is known about lymphoma from Roundup, which generally has a decade or more of delay in development.
Roundup Basics
Roundup, with its active ingredient glyphosate, is a popular weedkiller product. Monsanto Company released Roundup onto the market in 1974. It steadily rose in popularity, and had become the most commonly used weedkiller in the American agriculture industry by 2001. By 2007, through Roundup, the U.S. used around 185 million pounds of glyphosate per year.
These lymphoma patients and their loved ones decided to file a lawsuit against Monsanto, claiming that the company knew but failed to warn the public about the risks of lymphoma from Roundup use.
The lymphoma from Roundup lawsuit was filed on multiple counts, including design defect, failure to warn, negligence and fraud, misrepresentation, and suppression.
This lawsuit, along with countless others like it, alleges that Monsanto has continued to misrepresent the use of Roundup as safe, despite knowing of the link between glyphosate and a number of cancers, including lymphoma. Indeed, Monsanto has used the taglines “safer than table salt” and “practically non-toxic” to animals to describe its product, when the actual risk is much greater.
The New York Attorney General actually filed a lawsuit against Monsanto for making these kinds of statements, claiming they deceived customers about the actual safety of the product.
Cancers Linked with Roundup Use
Unfortunately, despite its popularity, Monsanto’s weedkiller Roundup has been linked with a number of types of cancer, including B-cell lymphoma, which is a kind of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Types of Roundup cancer that have so far been linked with the weedkiller include:
- Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
- Leukemia
- Multiple Myeloma
- B-cell Lymphoma
- Bone Cancer
- Renal Cell Carcinoma (kidney cancer)
- Other Cancers
