An Arizona man recently added to the growing pile of litigation against Monsanto over its popular weedkiller product Roundup.
The Monsanto lawsuit alleges that the plaintiff, James H., was exposed to Roundup for more than a decade, eventually leading to his diagnosis with non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. James says he used Roundup regularly over the course of eleven years in the upkeep of his property. While he used Roundup, he says he was not aware that Roundup exposure could cause health problems.
Unfortunately, in March 2017, James alleges he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and he has since undergone cancer treatment. He discovered the connection between Roundup and cancer after the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) published its glyphosate evaluation linking the two.
James field his Monsanto lawsuit on Aug. 7, 2018, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona. The Roundup lawsuit was filed on multiple counts, including design defect, failure to warn, negligence, breach of express and implied warranties, and several others. James’ wife Megan also filed on one count of loss of consortium.
James’ Monsanto lawsuit, along with countless others like it, alleges that the agricultural giant has misrepresented Roundup as safe, despite being aware of the risk of cancer from Roundup use.
Monsanto has gone so far as to use the taglines “safer than table salt” and “practically non-toxic” to animals to describe its product, despite allegedly being aware that the risk is much greater. In fact, back in 1996, the New York Attorney General filed a lawsuit against Monsanto for making these kinds of statements, claiming Monsanto’s marketing of Roundup was deceptive and dangerous to customers, misleading them about the actual safety of the product.
Basics of Roundup Cancer
Monsanto’s popular weedkiller Roundup has been linked with a number of types of Roundup cancer, including non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (NHL).
Farm workers and home gardeners like James are among the most at risk for Roundup side effects, given the common use of the product and risk of exposure in these roles. A number of farm workers and home gardeners have filed lawsuits against Monsanto with allegations of Roundup cancer, claiming that they were diagnosed with one of several kinds of cancer after using Roundup.
The Environmental Protection Agency began to suspect a Roundup cancer connection in the 1980s. A report published in March 2015 by the IARC concluded that glyphosate (the active ingredient in Roundup) is linked with cancer.
Cancer from Roundup Use
Types of cancer that have so far been linked with the weedkiller include the following:
- Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
- Leukemia
- Multiple Myeloma
- B-cell Lymphoma
- Bone Cancer
- Renal Cell Carcinoma (kidney cancer)
- Other Cancers
