Monsanto Company is facing a new Roundup lymphoma lawsuit from an Arizona man alleging the popular weedkiller had caused him to develop cancer.
The man claims that as a direct result of using Roundup killer he developed a serious cancer, which ultimately led to his filing of the Roundup lymphoma lawsuit. Plaintiff Gary R. alleges Monsanto company either knew or should have known about the cancer risks associated with their product.
According to the Roundup lymphoma lawsuit, Gary had been exposed to the weedkiller between 1979 and 1995. Gary had used the weedkiller for at least 16 years on his property in Nevada, which allegedly contributed to his cancer diagnosis. Gary was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia in January 2010, and he has had to contend with cancer treatment since his diagnosis.
Gary says he opted to file legal action after discovering the connection between Roundup and cancer sometime after July 29, 2015. The cancer risks stem from the main ingredient of Roundup, glyphosate, which has been linked to various cancers due to exposure.
Overview of Roundup Cancer Link
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has published reports regarding the increased risk of cancer from glyphosate.
The IARC issued a formal monograph regarding glyphosate, in which studies and data about the side effects of glyphosate were shown. Previously, the IARC had sought evaluation of several herbicides due to concerns about serious health complications reported by consumers.
The inquiry was based on several studies that observed the use of glyphosate in several countries, with health implications appearing as early as 2001. These studies were from the United States, Canada, and Sweden, each detailing the prevalent cancer risks glyphosate may pose.
The United States study was published in the journal Occupational Environmental Medicine, which concluded that glyphosate and certain other pesticides were “potentially carcinogenic.”
Furthermore, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had begun investigating the link in the 1980s after suspecting glyphosate’s link with certain cancers including:
- Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
- Leukemia
- Multiple Myeloma
- B-cell Lymphoma
- Bone Cancer
- Renal Cell Carcinoma (kidney cancer)
- Skin Tumors
- Pancreatic Islet Cell Tumors
- Chromosomal Damage
- DNA Damage
Even though the risks of cancer development have been reportedly prevalent with glyphosate use since the early 2000s, the Monsanto Company allegedly failed to warn the public of this correlation. Gary and numerous other consumers had used Roundup without any prior awareness to the cancer associations, which allegedly resulted in Gary becoming ill.
At all times relevant, Gary had used roundup for its intended purpose and did not deviate from the product’s instructions. Gary had no reason to believe or suspect he was in any danger of developing lymphoma or any other dangerous diseases.
Gary states that he never would have opted for the Roundup product if he had known the cancer risks. Gary is filing this Roundup lymphoma lawsuit to raise claims of negligence and failure to warn.
This Roundup Lymphoma Lawsuit is Case No. 2:17-cv-02473-MHB, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona.
