A husband and wife, plaintiffs Jeffrey J. and Laurie J., filed a new Roundup lymphoma lawsuit against the Monsanto Company, the makers of Roundup, alleging that the product caused Jeffrey’s development of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
According to the Roundup lymphoma lawsuit, the couple are residents of Charlotte County, Fla. and the lawsuit was filed on Dec. 6, 2017 in Florida federal court. Jeffrey asserts claims for personal injuries, including the development of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma from exposure to Roundup.
Jeffery alleges that his cancer occurred due to exposure to the product’s active ingredient glyphosate. Laurie is also asserting a claim for loss of consortium due to her husband’s development of the condition.
The Roundup lymphoma lawsuit against Monsanto alleges that the company failed to warn consumers about the risks of developing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and other forms of cancer from Roundup product exposure.
Roundup is a broad-spectrum herbicide used to kill grasses and weeds. The Monsanto Company began marketing Roundup and its active glyphosate ingredient, in 1974, after the company discovered its potential use in 1970. Since the 1970’s, the use of glyphosate-based herbicides has increased by 10,000% in terms of how much the products are used and how often.
A considerable number of consumers who have been exposed to significant amounts of Roundup have been diagnosed with B Cell or T Cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Various forms of these diseases exist, including chronic lymphocytic leukemia, mantle cell lymphoma, hairy cell leukemia, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, and follicular lymphoma.
Plaintiffs allege that for these consumers, the cancer is primarily caused due to exposure to glyphosate, Roundup’s main ingredient.
In fact, according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a division of the World Health Organization (WHO), glyphosate is labeled as a “probable” carcinogen, an ingredient known to cause cancer. The United States Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has said that “glyphosate ranks high among pesticides causing illness or injury to workers, who report numerous incidents of eye and skin irritation from splashes during mixing and loading.”
It is estimated that each year nearly 250 pounds of glyphosate is sprayed on lawns, driveways, golf courses, parks, commercial nurseries, and crops. Individuals most at risk of developing cancer due to significant Roundup exposure include employees in garden centers, landscapers, and nurseries.
Although Roundup has been believed to be one of the safest herbicides used in the world, more than 1,000 Roundup lymphoma lawsuits have been filed alleging consumer development of cancer, particularly non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Allegations against the company purport that Monsanto knew of the risks and link between cancer and Roundup exposure for years. Consumers accuse the company of failing to inform the public of the known risks marketing Roundup as a safe and effective herbicide
