monat-conditionerA new class action lawsuit alleges that Monat Global Corp. promotes its haircare products as being able to help growth, but consumers say they actually lost hair and experienced irritation after using the products.

Lead plaintiffs, Trisha Whitmire and Emily Yanes de Flores, allege in their class action lawsuit that they and others purchased Monat haircare products because they were promised aid in hair growth and health; however, say the plaintiffs, the chemicals in the products actually lead to increased hair loss.

They say the misrepresentations are part of a scam by Monat to get consumers to purchase even more expensive products from them.

Both plaintiffs allege that they experienced significant hair loss after investing substantial sums in Monat products. They say they brought their concerns to the company, but were told they were going through a “detox” process and would see healthier hair if they continued to use the Monat products. They say the company also pointed the finger at suppliers when they continued to complain.

“Shamefully, hair loss claims are met with unsubstantiated claims of a ‘detox’ period that will cause increased hair loss before the purported benefits of Monat haircare products accrue or worse yet, suggestions to spend more money on still more expensive Monat haircare products,” the Monat class action lawsuit states.

Frustratingly, allege the plaintiffs, the hair loss does not stop, even after consumers stop using the Monat products.

According to the Monat class action lawsuit, Monat advertises its products as “naturally-based” and “safe.” The plaintiffs say they were drawn in by claims that the haircare products were “suitable for all skin and hair types.”

Further, allege the plaintiffs, Monat claims that their products stop hair loss and aid in regrowth. The website, according to the complaint, touts chemicals used in Monat products as clinically proven to provide a “significant decrease in hair loss effect and increase in hair regrowth.”

“In fact, MONAT Hair Care Products use numerous harsh chemicals and known human allergens. As a result of the defective nature of the MONAT Hair Care Products, they were and are unfit for their intended use and purpose,” the Monat class action lawsuit claims.

According to the class action lawsuit, many other consumers experienced the same problems and misleading responses from the haircare company; however, Monat, a multilevel marketing scheme, has scrubbed customer complaints from the internet.

The Monat class action alleges that the wealthy family running the business has even sued a woman who set up a Facebook page for those who suffered hair loss after using Monat.

The plaintiffs seek to represent Monat hair care users who purchased the products since Jan. 1, 2014.

The plaintiffs are seeking damages as well as a court order stopping Monat from allegedly misrepresenting their product to the public.

The consumers are represented by Brian W. Warwick and Janet R. Varnell of Varnell & Warwick PA, Charles J. LaDuca and William H. Anderson of Cuneo Gilbert & LaDuca LLP, John A. Yanchunis of Morgan & Morgan PA, and Joel R. Rhine and Dara Damery of Rhine Law Firm PC.

The Monat Haircare Products Class Action Lawsuit is Trisha Whitmire, et al. v. Monat Global Corp., Case No. 1:18-cv-20636, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.

I stopped using Monat products because my hair started breaking off, and It messed up my hormones. I gained weight, started having cystic acne break outs, had sore nipples and severe headaches, I was extremely bloated, I missed periods, and I’ve been extremely fatigued. I thought I was pregnant because of all of these symptoms. My test was negative. I found out that Monat is causing these problems in a lot of women so that is when I quit using the products. Once I stopped using them, I got my period again, my headaches went away, my nipples weren’t sore anymore, I’m no longer bloated, and my breakouts are starting to ease up some. My daughter’s hair is worse than mine. It is now dry and brittle with dead and split ends, and has started breaking off, and falling out in clumps. She is autistic, and non verbal so she is unable to communicate if something hurts, but would scream in pain for days, and her doctor didn’t see an issue with her ears or throat. We thought she might have been having headaches like mine. Ever since we quit using Monat, she has been fine. No more screaming in pain so I feel that Monat might have been the problem. I cancelled my subscription to Monat, sent the items back, and requested a refund.

how does topical, non medicated hair care cause you to bloat and miss periods???

I too used Monet and experienced massive hair loss and severe irratition to my scalp. I was told to continue using the products because I was going through a detox but my hair was falling out by the handfuls and my scalp was very irritated and itching so bad that I couldn’t sleep. I stopped using and tried contacting the company without any results. I sent all the bottles back for a refund since I was within the time limits but still haven’t received my refund. I have not used the product for almost 2 months and am still experiencing painfully itchy scalp and some hair loss.

I myself was only using Monat products and did so for an entire year. I never used anything else. I don’t dye or straighten my hair often either. I was noticing that my hair was no longer fitting into a pony tail. Very odd since my stylist will only trim my hair once every 12 weeks and it has never been too short to fit in one. Nothing else has changed in my life and I noticed more and more posts showing up about people who used Monat and what it had done. I had the same results as a lot of the posts I was seeing. I was shocked and scared. I immediately stopped using Monat and went to see my stylist. We have started to try and see what we can do and the more I look up I am growing more and more concerned. This week when I went to see her we actually took a real hard look at my hair as well as another stylist that was there and what we’ve seen is scary. My hair is breaking off more than I actually thought and it’s all over. It looks just like really bad heat damage – white ends and they’re frayed. Not only that but my hair is super uneven. We had to trim them off this time again and it was only 6 weeks ago that I had it done last. I am worried that it will keep breaking and am unsure what to do. Anyone out there going through this too? If so, what are you doing to repair your hair and is it working for you? I wish I had never heard of Monat and I hope more people do their research before buying this product although it seems to be a little more difficult to find bad reviews, almost like they’re being deleted?? If it does work for you that’s great but it did not work for me.

Turn down your hot tools! No higher than 350 degrees.

      1. Tanya says:

My straightener is never above 300 and I only straighten my hair maybe once every couple of months. It’s breakage not heat damage. I went to a professional after using this junk not a company/pyramid scheme

    2. Kristin says:

This happened to my friend. Your stylist has to stop the chemical process, like a perm. Whatever they to do to stop a perm from processing is what you need to use.

      1. Tanya says:

I’ve been using moisture conditioner twice a week and a moisture treatment once a week. If anything positive came out of this it is that my hair is starting to become healthy again. My hair is super fine and one of the ingredients is what they use in hair relaxer which is why I’ve gotten all the damage. I’m glad I got rid of it all and went to a professional. My hair is now hopefully on the mend. It’s been broken off pretty short but it’s starting to feel a bit healthier and it’s actually quite shiny now. It no longer feels greasy. I’m only sorry it took me almost a full year to realize and that I didn’t do my research first.

Once upon a short time ago …I was a happy , active , 55 year old woman with a full head of healthy hair just past my shoulders ……I am now a depressed 55 year old woman who lost over half her hair using MONAT …The bald spots are still terrifying to look at in the mirror . This needs to be taken off the market .I don’t understand how they can get away with selling it . The End.

  6. Annie Sedlacek says:

I agree . I started the Monat products myself . My hair started falling out in big pieces . Thought it was my thyroid went to my dermatologist who explain Hair products due not detox your head . He stands on a commuter to make sure productsare safe !
He said they were being sued .
My hair dresser said they won’t even color clients who use Monat as they have found health issues after having hair colored !
I agree . It happen to me !

I want the truth . As my daughter used it and recently has medical issues for unexplain reason . I was told the products could cause hormone issues ?
Could this be the attack on her organs !

My sister sells the products . She won’t stop selling them . Says it a detox process once complete all fine
Yet my nephew continues to loose his hair . Eye brows .
I trust the dermatologist and the beautician . Something is wrong ?

    Please let me know
