Lenovo LawsuitA class action lawsuit was filed against computer technology company Lenovo (United States) Inc. in Massachusetts federal court alleging that the company misrepresented the battery life of its Yoga 2 Pro laptop in promotional materials and advertising.

Lead plaintiff Orlando Medeiros alleged that Lenovo advertised that the Yoga 2 Pro’s battery would last up to nine hours. “Lenovo made this representation both on its website and through specifications it provided to retailers, which Lenovo knew and intended would be related to purchasers to induce them to purchase the Yoga 2 Pro,” the Lenovo class action lawsuit alleges.

“Lenovo’s representations concerning the battery life of the Yoga 2 Pro were untrue; the laptop generally provided only four to five, or at most, six hours of battery life on a full charge,” the Lenovo class action lawsuit continues. The plaintiff claims that Lenovo’s alleged misrepresentations about the Yoga 2 Pro’s battery life violated North Carolina law as well as express warranties the company made to its customers.

According to the Lenovo class action lawsuit, Medeiros, a Massachusetts resident, purchased Lenovo’s Yoga 2 Pro laptop through their website in October of 2013. The plaintiff claims that at a cost of approximately $2,000, the Yoga 2 Pro is a high-end Lenovo product.

Almost immediately after his purchase of the Yoga 2 Pro, Medeiros alleges that he noticed that the battery life upon a full charge did not come close to nine hours of battery life. “He attempted to improve the laptop’s battery life by placing the laptop in ‘Power Saving’ battery mode—a software setting on his laptop designed to maximize battery life,” the Lenovo class action lawsuit says, “but the laptop continued to fall significantly short of the battery life Lenovo represented, typically lasting only four or five, or at most, six hours.” The plaintiff further alleges that since he has owned the laptop, “[t]he battery life of the laptop has continued to deteriorate since he purchased the laptop at a much faster rate than is typical for laptop batteries.”

The plaintiff seeks to represent a Class of potentially hundreds of thousands of consumers who purchased the Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro laptop. He also seeks damages and treble damages under North Carolina law, as well as costs and attorney fees.

The plaintiff is filing this class action lawsuit against the United States subsidiary of Lenovo, which is a Delaware corporation with its headquarters and principal place of business in Morrisville, N.C. Lenovo Group Limited, a Hong Kong corporation with its principal place of business in Beijing, China, is the parent company. According to the class action lawsuit, Lenovo Group Limited designs, develops, manufactures, and sells personal computers, tablet computers, smartphones, workstations, servers, electronic storage devices, and smart televisions internationally through its subsidiaries, including Lenovo. Additionally, according to the class action lawsuit, half of Lenovo’s $38.7 billion revenue this year comes from the sale of its Yoga 2 Pro Laptop.

A settlement was reached in a separate class action lawsuit concerning WiFi connectivity of Lenov’s Ultrabook this past September.

Medeiros is represented by Thomas G. Shapiro and Patrick J. Vallely of Shapiro Haber & Urmy LLP.

    This is the case for all their laptops; I have purchased two laptops from Lenovo and they both state 15 hours battery life but none of their laptops last as long as they are advertised. The battery life of their laptops only last for 6 hours and that is with minimal scrolling, low brightness and power save mode. 6 hours battery life is very far off from what is advertised on the Lenovo website. Lenovo needs to be sued and everyone deserved a reimbursements!!!!

    I have owned my Yoga 2 Pro since 2014 and I am lucky if I get 2 hours – most often only 1 hour from a full charge. I bought it from Best Buy as well. I’d love to get compensation – how do I get my piece of the suit?

    Same thing happened to my wifes computer. Battery got warm and then the computer does not turn on.

    Hi. I always wondered why my battery on the yoga 2, would always be drained ! Now it won’t start. Opened it up. Appears the battery is leaking !!
    It’s this suit still active ?

    Lenova Yoga 2, same problem. Less than 4 year old computer had to be replaced because the “damaged battery” cannot be replaced. How can I join the lawsuit? My new computer is Not a Lenova.

    My battery in my yoga 2 pro just took a dump on my this week after having it for 4 years. I had a fan that i connected to the usb port that probably helped extend the life but a computer should last longer then that. It wont turn on. I lost my photos.

    My Lenovo Yogi 2 Pro had a meltdown at the three year mark. The battery apparently overheated and damaged the computer, causing the bottom of the case to bubble and shows black charred burn marks on the outside of the case. It still functions, as long as it’s plugged in, however it’s unstable when on battery and doesn’t last very long.
    I spoke with Lenovo and was told it was out of warranty, theirs and the extended one I purchased.
    Really need to be part of a class action suit if one in being filed.

    I’ve experience exact same! My Yoga 2 is less than 2 years old, battery was hot after charging for 2 hours, and now laptop will not turn on.

    Where are all the people? My own PURCHASE of a Lenovo Yogo 2 PRO? That was Very Expensive, purchased at a Best Buy, Not a Refurb, brand new, hasn’t worked right from the get go. Been having problems with HOT battery, Not Re-Charging, & today, just after 2 years after Purchase, it just shut off after having no Battery Problems, because the Battery had a FULL CHARGE.. It did get hot the other day, both laptop & Battery always has, & yet, NO LIGHTS< NO TURNING ON, NOTHING..Will Not even Turn on..WHAT A POS..All this money spent, & No Way to find out how to Fix or what to try? Is the WHOLE BACK THE BATTERY? This is BS, But then again, EVERYTHING DOES COME FROM CHINA, SO WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT? No Matter how much it costs, & this one was EXPENSIVE, Still a POS! As are Most anything from there, or SAMSUNG, which puts their NAME on EVERYTHING, From SOUP TO NUTS!
