just for menA class action lawsuit filed on Jan 25 accuses Just for Men hair dye maker Combe, Inc., and other Combe companies, of deceptive advertising.  The complaint alleges that Just for Men brand hair dye does not properly warn consumers about its ingredients and the potential side effects of those ingredients, such as chemical burns and severe allergic reactions.

“Even if used as directed, [the Just for Men] Defendants failed to adequately warn against the negative effects and risks associated with this product,” such as “burns, scarring, allergic reactions, anaphylactic shock, skin depigmentation, and other severe injuries” associated with prolonged use, according to the complaint.

The Just for Men burning hair dye class action lawsuit points to the chemical ingredient p-Phenylenediamine (PPD) as especially harmful.  The complaint states that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has linked PPD to “severe dermatitis,” “renal failure,” “vitiligo” (which is loss of skin pigment), and even “convulsions and comas.” The complaint claims PPD is also considered a “strong sensitizer” by the Consumer Product Safety Commission and was once named “allergen of the year” by the American Contact Dermatitis Society.

“Defendants knew or should have known that more than 5% of the population will have an adverse reaction to PPD, yet, Defendants concealed and withheld this information from the public,” the Just for Men class action asserts.  The class action lawsuit goes on to state that the risk of adverse reaction to PPD is higher for African Americans, up to 10% or 21% based on different studies.

Plaintiff Ronald Povich states that he purchased and used Just for Men hair dye in August of 2014, based on the Combe defendants’ claims that the product was safe. He seeks to represent a class of all Missouri residents who purchased Just for Men hair dye for personal use, and asks for damages for violations of Missouri unfair trade practice laws.

The Just for Men hair dye class action lawsuit also alleges the Combe defendants violate Missouri consumer protection laws by failing to warn of the increased risk of multiple uses of the hair dye, and for recommending an improper and ineffective skin test before use.

According to the class action complaint, federal law requires Just for Men to give instructions on how to test the hair dye, and that “Defendants recommend a self-applied ‘skin patch test’ on a consumer’s arm prior to use.”

However, the Just For Men class action lawsuit states that “Defendants recommend this test despite knowing that facial skin is more sensitive and may react differently than the arm or other parts of the body.” Furthermore, the “universal standard” for allergic tests is having a dermatologist do a “patch test” on a person’s back, which the Just for Men defendants fail to recommend, the class action alleges.

Povich is represented by John J. Driscoll and Philip Sholtz of The Driscoll Firm, PC, and Richard W. Schulte of Wright & Schulte, LLC.

The Just For Men Burning Hair Dye Class Action Lawsuit is Ronald Povich v. Combe Incorporated, et al., Case No. 4:16-cv-00097, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri.

My experience with “Just for Men” hair coloring is definitely not good. Mainly the mustache / beard product was the worst. I had mustache, no beard. When using it on mustache I tried to keep it off my lips but a little of it always got on my lips and even though I wiped and washed it off quickly it still caused my lips to burn, sometimes for 2 or 3 days. The last time I used this product was some over a year ago and that time my lips not only burned but had a tingling sensation that lasted over a week and some white patches were visible on my bottom lip. I showed this to my dermatologist and told him about what this product was doing to me. He said to definitely NOT use it any more, but by this time I had already made up my mind to never use it again. The company that made / makes this dangerous product should be held accountable in every way the law allows.

I was watching tv last night and saw the commercial about the class action suit that is filed against Just For Men. Finally I can pin point the reason for the itching, redness, and what made me lose my sideburns.

Please “Jugde” if your looking at these comments online Please don’t dismiss. Just for men has messed up a lot of men’s faces. I have permanent skin discoloration an scaring behind using “Just for men hair dye. I was also briefly hospitalized. Dont let these people get away with ruining peoples lives by putting poison on store shelves an selling it. These people have wrecked my personal facial apperance for a buck. Please judge don’t allow these greedy sons of bitches to get away with hurting people. The combe company knew the risks on what was in their product. Make the combe corporation pay every individual they have harmed handsomely. Victims deserve every penny of compensation they can get. Combe inc. had turned my face an many other mens faces into a halloween mask an halloween hasnt come yet. “Dear Judge”..I ask you to make Combe Inc. pay dearly for the Poisonous garbage they’ve put on store shelves.

    1. Steve Gehrke says:

Hear hear! Well said. To this day I continue to suffer from the effects of that product having damaged my face. It’s been almost 3 years now since I was burnt buy this product and I hope the settlement comes sometime soon. I have only one picture that my wife took of my red and swollen face after hours using Just For Men. I feel bad for those who did nothing after getting burnt. I did not have the resources to go to a doctor when it happened and I’m glad I at least have a picture. Consequently my settlement may not amount to much because my lack of documentation, but what about those who have nothing to prove they were burnt? my face is now extremely sensitive to anything I do. Simply washing my face causes it to become inflamed, swollen and red because the burn I received using Just For Men. And I anticipate this happening for the rest of my life. So in my opinion the manufacturer should be punished and the victims awarded compensation! Anytime this decade would be nice. (Hint).

      1. William Heron says:

I’m in same boat brother. my face has a defined line/scar under the chin where the burning was worse and i had gone to the doctor when the goatee area that i had been using product on literally had no pigment left, an extremely noticeable effect when one has a complete tan including face but a very sudden white “no pigment” area around the goatee. even shaving, two years later is painful and causes extreme redness.
