Jeep class action lawsuitChrysler Group LLC was named in a Jeep defective ignition switch class action lawsuit filed on Monday in a California federal court. The class action lawsuit alleges that Chrysler willfully concealed a defect in older Jeep models ignition switches from their consumers.

This ignition switch defect could lead to a stalled engine or even prevent an airbag from deploying during emergencies, similar to the massive GM ignition switch recall connected to numerous deaths and injuries.

The Chrysler class action lawsuit was filed by MLG Automotive Law in California federal court, just a few days after Chrysler recalled 792,000 vehicles over the alleged ignition switch failure.  According to the class action lawsuit, the automaker waited years to reveal the known ignition switch defect present in 2006-2007 Jeep Commander and 2005-2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee models and had received more than 100 complaints about the problem.

Chrysler has said that when the ignition switch is hit by any kind of outside force — for example, a drivers knee hitting the key in the ignition — it could result in the recalled Chrysler vehicles stalling, losing braking power, reduce steering capacity, and the front airbags and other safety features may become disabled.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) last month got the recall started after announcing  an investigation of reports of ignition switch defects in allegedly 1.25 million vehicles made by Chrysler. The Chrysler Jeep ignition switch class action lawsuit comes on the heels of numerous General Motors ignition switch class action lawsuits.

The Jeep ignition switch class action lawsuit states, “Despite the NHTSA requirement that the automaker notify regulators within five days of learning of the defect, Chrysler waited years to come clean. It is unknown how many people have died or been seriously injured because of the defect[.]”

Since June, NHTSA has pursued two ignition switch defect investigations involving about 525,000 Chrysler vehicles after receiving more than 32 complaints reporting the key fob moving out of the accessory mode when hit by a driver’s knee.

The Chrysler Defective Jeep Ignition Switch Lawsuit is Latoya Lumpkin v. Chrysler Group LLC in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. The case number was not immediately available.

My airbag did not deploy. I was driving in my grand Jeep Cherokee approaching a light I went to stop in my brakes failed. I slammed into the back of another car. The front end of my truck was destroyed my airbag did not deploy, I flew over the steering well I hit my head on the windshield. My steering wheel was leveled like it was a serving plate in front of me. I have pictures to back all this up. I was rushed to the hospital .

Thousands and thousands of people are having these exact issues with power failure, no starting, battery drain, and most of the time it was AFTER this ignition recall. None of these problems were known, on our personal 2007 Jeep Commander before the recall. So if you don’t fix the problem, you may die, if you do fix the problem, your Jeep may only start sometimes? This is not with only the commander, several other Jeep models have the same exact and particular issue! You can replace the starter, the starter fuse, the battery, the starter yellow cable, the whole harness going to the starter, and you can still see this same problem return! Is it corrosion from cheap metal? Is it poor cheap wiring harness? Poor cheap starter that keeps failing? Everyone seems to be able to fix the problem, but only for a short time, and the problem comes right back! But what is the real problem? Chrysler/FIAT needs to address this ASAP. It’s been going on for decades, I don’t know how people put up with this mess of a problem. Please get this train moving!

2007 Jeep commander, same issues, had ignition switch recalled, after that down the line… all sorts of weird issues with battery, battery drain, etc..new starter, alternator passed several tests, battery passed several tests inside the vehicle, then tested alone outside the vehicle, battery failed.. replaced battery.. [WAITING TO SEE IF NEW BATTERY DRAINS ALSO]
‘Anyone reading this, never buy a new Fiat/Chrysler product!” These aren’t real JEEPS! You need to go back when at least American Motors still owned Jeep, to get anything close to when a JEEP was still a real JEEP, now you’re buying basically piles of trash on wheel, used with cheapest parts possible for profits, and paying thousand and thousands of dollars, just because it’s says JEEP on the side of that new FIAT! lol

My husband has a 2002 Jeep Cherokee and when he puts his key in ignition it won’t turn, like freezes up. On Utube they said it hit it with a mallet to loosen up, he did and it worked rest of summer now cold locking up again. He took it in and told the mechanic about it and they turned it on and off and no problem so of course they would not repair it.

I bought the 2006 Jeep Commander, I brought it in for a new key fob, the service tech guy said that there’s recalls that needed to be fixed, EVER SINCE I had the Recalls and IGNITION SWITCH done, I’ve had NOTHING but problems,. Engine stalling out, loss of power, and a check engine light. since the Recalls it has already caused an accident, thankfully nobody got hurt. Has anyone else got the Recalls and is going through the same thing as I? How do I fix this?!..
I am disabled on a fixed income with 3 young children and can’t afford much. The dealership said I would have to pay out of pocket to figure out what is going on.

I have a 2006 Jeep Commander that I bought on 2014 at a dealer of the brand.
Sometimes many lights lightup on the dashboard. I change the parts which according to mechanic guy said must be changed. There is a month, I was driving on the highway 826 in Miami and the power go down on my car. At this moment I had no brakes, no power, no transmission, nothing. Immediately I stopped on the side. I waited a few minutes and I restarted, and I got home.
I took my car to the dealer that to see what is the problem. He keeps it for 4 days, and did not find anything. After this my car repeat same problem 3 times, and the last week I went back to the dealer because I listened to the recalls info. I went on the website, and surprise, my car (VIN) is there and has been signaled for a recall because the ignition.
I do not know what I need to do because the dealer is not cooperative. Please can you help me?

I drive a 2008 Chrysler Town & Country that has been affected by this recall. Chrysler told me similar information as they told Mr. Rockwell. My vehicle shuts off several times a day, whether I’m in a parking lot or doing 70MPH down the highway. I’ve heard the airbags will not deploy during an accident caused by this, because of the issue itself. I’m more worried about the death of one of my children, myself or a completely innocent driver in a safe vehicle that I crash into. Chrysler is not willing to fix the issue, replace the vehicles or do anything for it’s owners. The GM recall that was similar resulted in 38 deaths. 38 people died. At what point is someone going to step in and hold these car manufacturers accountable?

  9. Brian F. Rockwell says:

Seems sometimes I have to drive with one hand on my key/ignition to keep my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee running and then just the jiggle of the ignition will cause my dash safety lights and tach/speedometer to flash and reset all the time. Called my dealer and was told I can pay to have this fixed, as to them hinting that they do have a ignition/key fobs in stock, but i will have to pay for this fix myself and maybe Chrysler will reimburse me for the recall. I called the toll free number to Chrysler and was told that if i would have had this repaired before i got the first recall letter about the ignition recall, they would reimburse me back for the repairs. However, now that i have gotten the first recall letter, if the dealer has a ignition in stock i will have to pay for it myself and maybe Chrysler will reimburse me for this. Seems this is bs over a ignition recall……if i would have known about this problem before i bought my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee back in April of this year (2014) i would have passed it up and looked at something else. Pretty bad I have to drive with one hand on my steering wheel and the other hand on my key/ignition to keep driving down the road and then what if i would get into a accident, will my air bags go off or am i just shit out of luck?…..Get this crap fixed Chrysler before you loose more money over a death from one of these……wow!
