Jeep class action lawsuitFiat Chrysler has been hit with a proposed class action lawsuit alleging the Uconnect infotainment system installed in certain Jeep vehicles are filled with glitches that render it defective.

Manufactured by Fiat Chrysler, Uconnect is a next-generation in-vehicle connectivity systems specifically designed for Chrysler, Dodge, FIAT, Jeep and Ram vehicles.

The software includes a voice-activated, in-dash infotainment system that provides an integrated, radio, phone, navigation and entertainment system, complete with various apps.

In June 2015, plaintiff Duane Kiser of Kentucky purchased a model-year 2015 Jeep Renegade with the Uconnect feature, allegedly paying an additional $1,245 for the system, but he claims the software doesn’t work properly.

“Plaintiff specifically purchased this Vehicle, with this Uconnect version, because it provided a navigation feature, a Weather Map mobile app, and a Wi-Fi ‘hot spot,’ through which Plaintiff could obtain internet access,” the Fiat Chrysler Uconnect complaint states.

According to Kiser, since he purchased the vehicle, the Uconnect Weather Map mobile app has not worked at all, the GPS navigation system has been out-of-date and has repeatedly failed during use, and the Wi-Fi hot spot has also failed repeatedly.

“Plaintiff has taken the Vehicle to Grayson Chrysler Jeep Dodge, a dealership in Grayson, Kentucky, for attempted service and repair of the Uconnect system on no fewer than eight occasions, resulting in the loss of use of his vehicle for approximately 75 days,” the FCA Uconnect class action purports.

Yet, despite numerous visits to the dealership to fix the allegedly defective Uconnect, and even with a replacement Uconnect system, Kiser says the software still fails to work properly.

The class action further claims that “after his last visit to the dealership, the service advisor informed Plaintiff that, according to a regional service manager employed by Defendant, there was no problem with Plaintiff’s Vehicle because all Jeep Renegades with the Uconnect system version 6.5/RA4 would fail in the same way.”

Kiser alleges that Fiat Chrysler touts its reliability of the Uconnect system, but that the system actually falls short of FCA’s representation and instead cheats consumers by depriving them of the system they paid for.

“[Defendant] designed, developed, engineered, and programmed a proprietary voice-activated, in-dash infotainment system known as Uconnect … at least one of the Uconnect systems available on the model-year 2015 Jeep Renegade, version 6.5/RA4, does not work as intended, marketed, or warranted by Defendant,” the complaint states.

Kiser brings this action on behalf of himself and a proposed Class of similarly-situated purchasers and lessees of the 2015 Jeep Renegade in which the Uconnect version 6.5/RA4 was installed. He contends that he and other Class Members paid more for the vehicles than they would have paid had they been aware of the defects or they simply would not have purchased the vehicles at all.

He is bringing forth specific claims that Fiat Chrysler violated the Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act; Kentucky Consumer Protection Act; West Virginia Consumer Credit and Protection Act; Unfair, False, and Deceptive Trade Practices; Breach of Express Warranty; and Breach of Common Law Warranty.

Kiser is seeking punitive and compensatory damages, as well as attorney’s fees and court costs.

The plaintiff is represented by Matthew T. Lockaby of Lockaby PLLC.

The Jeep Defective Uconnect Class Action Lawsuit is Duane Kiser v. FCA US LLC, Case No. 0:16-cv-00072, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern Division of Kentucky, Northern Division at Ashland.

UCONNECT model 430N in my 2016 Wrangler Rubicon cannot access maps. This is a well known and documented problem in these units that Chrysler has known about for years yet they still install them in their vehicles. Love my Jeep but PISSED AT CHRYSLER!!

The UConnect in my 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee failed last week, with only 35,000 kms (20,000 miles) on the vehicle. The touch screen is now totally unresponsive. I have no access to vehicle system settings, no audio, no bluetooth, and I cannot shut off the heated seat. Everything is tied into the UConnect. It’s not like just not having a radio.

I’ve preveiously had intermittent issues with the key fobs not being recognized, which resulted in my being locked out of the vehicle, triggering the alarm when entering with the hidden key, then difficulty in both shutting off the alarm and starting the vehicle. Also problems locking it and setting the alarm remotely with the fobs.

One dealership tried to tell me I was imagining the problems. They had the Jeep for a entire day last week only to try and claim my only real issue was that the batteries in the fobs were dead (they were not). But I found a service bulletin about a software fix for the climate control system shutting itself off randomly, and after they installed that it was resolved. But a week later … entire UConnect goes dead on me.

I took Jeep to different dealership this morning, and they confirmed the UConnect is defective and must be replaced. So glad I purchased an extended warranty good until 2020 or I would be getting screwed for thousands of dollars to replace what is obviously flawed / defective technology.

2014 Ram 1500 8.4 U connect, GPS constantly malfunctions, Vehicle Phone Malfunction Message every time, display will fail to come on at times 5-10 minutes after truck has been started which results in no climate control either. I have the extended warranty Dodge will not stand behind the issues. No big surprise.

There has been a MAJOR issue this weekend with 2018 vehicles with Uconnect. We purchased a brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk last month. Saturday, UConnect console started rebooting every 30 seconds and would not stop. Even when the vehicle is completely off! Key fob is nowhere near the vehicle and UConnect will NOT stop rebooting every 30 seconds. We were told to try disconnect the fuse box under the hood entirely……didn’t even work. We were then told as a last resort to disconnect the car battery. Otherwise, the battery would drain just from the UConnect console rebooting every 30 secs. Nothing dealer can do. We were finally told today this is a widespread problem from an update issued Sat. We are told a new update is being worked on. In the meantime, we can not use the car! 2 days now. Dealer can’t do anything. What a helpless feeling to not be able to control your car.

I have a 2014 RAM 1500 sport with the uconnect 8.4an. The navigation constantly fails and I have to rely on a $100 garmin unit instead of the $1000+ dollar unit in the truck. I have also had the 9-1-1 phone needs srevice, and the clock refuses to keep time, whether set with gps or manually set. All this happens when the gps loses signal.

  6. TIMOTHY JACKSON says:

Bought a new 2018 Grand Cherokee and the uconnect head unit glitched on the drive home from delivery with only 22 miles on it.

My wife switched audio sources from xmsat to fm and the volume went from a low decibel to max without touching the volume knob and if you turn the knob all the way down it would mute, but if you turn the knob to setting 1 it would output as if setting was on maximum. Only way to fix it was leaving the car off awhile.

Called uconnect and filed a case but was told to take it back to the dealer which is futile. We need a class action law suit so everyone effected can receive funds for a aftermarket unit of similar capabilities and the cost of installation. Uconnect has had enough time to sort this out, they could have coded a whole new OS from scratch by now but instead went the cheaper route by trying to patch a flawed system.

  7. Joseph Sandrowski says:

I have a jeep grand cherokee limited 2014 , the whole radio and control system for heat ect. malfunctioned , uconnect says to do the update , the dealer tried the update , it failed , I tried the update it failed , dealer says to fix it you have to replace the whole radio unit at $ 850.00 , no rebate
I want to get on board with this lawsuit, The internet is full of people with the same problem .

I have a 2015 Jeep Trailhawk with the 8.4 and its a complete POS. Decides when and if it wants to support voice texting, regardless of the fact that the payment has been made on a yearly basis. For $150/yr it would be nice if the service was actually consistent once in a while.

  9. Vinnie Bendzak says:

My uconnect keeps saying vehicle phone needs service

  10. Wendy G says:

I’m having issue with my 2015 jeep renegade. The driver heated seat and steering wheel turns on by itself. Even, if you turn them off they are still on. The button to control this function in most cases does not work. I’ve taken the vehicle back to them 4 times. As of this writing the dealership still has it.
