Google gift card scams class action overview:

  • Who: Google is facing a class action lawsuit over Google Play Store gift cards involved in scams.
  • Why: Google is accused of profiting from scams involving Google Play Store gift cards and refusing to reimburse individuals who were scammed into purchasing the gift cards.
  • Where: The Google gift card scams lawsuit was filed in federal court in California.

A new class action lawsuit accuses Google of profiting from Google Play Store gift card scams and refusing to reimburse victims of those scams.

Google kept millions of dollars from those involved in Google gift card scams despite being contacted directly by those scam victims and receiving information to identify and return the stolen funds, the Google class action says.

Google deposits a percentage of the money into Google Play Developer accounts and keeps approximately 15% to 30% of the face value of the gift card as commission, the lawsuit says.

“Google plays a direct and vital role in the gift card scams by allowing gift cards which it knows were involved in fraud to be redeemed and spent on digital currency and/or digital products which scammers can resell for currency,” the Google class action says.

Scammers demand gift cards to avoid arrest for taxes, bail, debts, lawsuit says

Lead plaintiff Judy May says she was scammed into purchasing $1,000 in Google Play gift cards and later contacted Google to inform the company what happened.

“Google informed her that there was nothing it could do and that it would not refund the monies she had paid for the Google Play gift cards,” the class action says.

May’s experience is similar to that of other scam victims, who say they received calls from criminals claiming they owe money for things like taxes, bail or debts, and that they need to pay up with gift cards and provide a Social Security number to avoid arrest, the lawsuit says.

Google also faced a 2021 class action lawsuit claiming its Google Play gift cards violate California law by being too difficult to redeem.

Google is responsible for the products they present for sale and ultimately responsible for after they are bought under the pretense they haven’t been redeemed which they have been by thieves so therefore Google is responsible for selling worthless gift cards and misleading the people that bought them into believing the gift cards were not used or redeemed by anyone other individuals. What’s happening here is Google not wanting to pay out the money for the gift cards twice, once to the scammers and once to the rightful purchaser !?!?!?

Google is responsible for the products they present for sale and ultimately responsible for after they are bought under the pretense they haven’t been redeemed which they have been by thieves so therefore Google is responsible for selling worthless gift cards and misleading the people that bought them into believing the gift cards were not used or redeemed by anyone other individuals. Google has set up stores into selling useless and worthless gift cards because thieves have figured out a way to get the information needed to use or redeem the gift cards others have purchased legally. Therefore, Google is responsible for selling worthless, useless gift cards because they had upfront knowledge of the scams and continued to sell and place for sell at different outlets that were purchased by legitimate purchases and getting nothing for their money. Now, Google has made themselves part of the scam by making it so scammers get away with stealing from people that work for a living and Google has knowledge of what is going on by the scammers from the complaints of the people that have and are being scammed. Google is giving money from redeemed gift cards to scammers and not the people that purchased the gift cards. Like I said Google had knowledge of what is happening but they don’t care and they don’t want to have to payout for gift cards twice. Once to the scammer that stole the money from the illegally obtained gift cards and again to the purchaser that rightfully and legally purchased the gift cards. So yeah, Google knows and they’re responsible… Or are you to blind to see what’s happening or perhaps you work for Google or one of their subsidiaries yourself !?!?!?

Add me… Google has yet to redeem or refund me for a $100 gift card I bought at Walmart and a $10 gift card that I purchased at Dollar General. I purchased these two cards over two years ago and they won’t refund my money or replace the gift cards because they want my other Google account information but the problem is I have never had but one Google account to start with !?!?!?

    1. Cheryl Hagy says:

I have a drawful of Google. Play gift cards that worst sscammed before I even used them, and was told they couldn’t do anything about it and I’ve kept every card and receipt to this day.

      1. Kyle Miller says:

Add me I have been refused over 500$ to be refunded from Google
