AFord has recalled nearly 1.74 million vehicles due to problems with the infotainment system that impact the rearview camera functionality.
The Ford recall, announced on March 9, involves two separate notices filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The first recall affects approximately 889,950 vehicles, including the 2020-2022 Ford Escape, Lincoln Corsair, 2020-2024 Lincoln Aviator and Ford Explorer models.
This recall is due to instances where the car’s screen flips upside down, causing the rearview camera to display inverted images. According to the recall, this issue stems from the touch Integrated Circuit on the display’s printed circuit board, leading to non-compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
The second recall involves about 849,310 vehicles, specifically the 2021-2024 Ford Edge and 2021-2026 Ford Bronco models.
This recall addresses problems with the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM), which controls the infotainment system. The APIM can overheat, resulting in a thermal shutdown that leaves drivers without a functional center touchscreen while in reverse mode.
Ford has clarified that a blank infotainment screen serves as a warning of this thermal shutdown.
Rearview camera malfunctions increase crash risk, recall states
The Ford recall notice highlights that the malfunctioning rearview cameras pose a significant risk, as incorrect or blank displays can limit drivers’ visibility when reversing.
“A driver being in reverse and having their rearview camera displaying an incorrect image increases ‘the risk of a crash,'” the Ford recall notice says. Additionally, there are no preceding warnings for these conditions, and they typically resolve after a system restart.
Ford has assured customers that the issues will be resolved through software updates. These updates will be available either via Ford’s Over-The-Air software update or by visiting a Ford or Lincoln dealership.
The service will be provided free of charge to customers. “Ford Motor Company said the cars would receive software updates to rectify the issues,” according to the recall.
For those seeking more information about the recall, Ford advises contacting their customer service at 1-866-436-7332 or visiting a local Ford or Lincoln dealer.
Ford states it has not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
