Ford F-150 Lightning cost increase overview:

  • Who: Ford increased the sale price of its F-150 Lightning electric pickup trucks by $7,000.
  • Why: “Significant material cost increases” led to the price increase.
  • Where: The price hike affects new customers nationwide.

New orders for Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup trucks will have a much higher price tag moving forward: Base models will cost about $7,000 more.

The first version of the Lightning trucks, the Pro, cost about $40,000. Ford attributes the new $47,000 price tag to “significant material cost increases and other factors,” according to an announcement from the company.

Ford’s price increase affects other Lightning models, too. More highly equipped models face increases of up to $8,500. Ford Lightning trucks are currently eligible for the $7,500 federal electric vehicle tax credit, which applies to certain all-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, although legislation may change this eligibility.

Ford customers who have already ordered a Lightning truck aren’t affected by this price increase, according to Ford. Customers who have a reservation to order, however, but have not yet been invited to place a firm order may have to pay the higher price.

Ford adds features to pricier F-150 Lightning

Ford stopped taking retail orders for F-150 Lightning trucks at the end of 2021 due to limited production capacity compared to increasing customer demand.

During that pause, Ford made some changes to the electric pickup truck. For one, the truck can travel farther before needing a battery recharge, known as the driving range, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The Lightning base model’s range is now 240 miles, compared to the previous 230 miles.

Ford also added the Pro Trailer Hitch Assist feature to base models, which is designed to automatically steer the truck to better facilitate hooking up a trailer.

There is a lot here, specifically to those who have placed orders at one price and are being told to pay a higher price or forfeit the vehicle once is arrives at the dealer. Ford claims it’s between the buyer and the dealer but the dealer can change their mind on delivery and the buyer has no recourse. Ford favcilitated the deal, they claim to honor the price at the time of order, they take the reservation and order deposits and give them to dealer, but it’s done through Ford. Many of us have spent a lot of time on these orders only to be told to pay a higher price or take a hike when it’s time to pick up the vehicle

Customers with reservations prior to the price increase should not have pay the $7500 price increase. Ford should have anticipated their cost demand based on preorders and locked prices in for those customers. I was forced to upgrade to the Lariat model because they limited quantities and production of the lower costs models. How can I get my money back? Ford also took the employee incentives to the lowest value I have ever experienced in all my years of purchasing using employee AXZ plans. Employees don’t even get a discount on the necessary charger.

  3. John Benanzer says:

Strange that they would raise the price of their vehicles the same amount as the government issue rebate. I have been cheated. Additionally they announced today they will not make the model I wanted available to me as I am not a commercial customer.

Heard anything about Ford suing lightning owners if they sell the truck before having it one year?
