Electrolux Home Products Inc. has been hit with a class action lawsuit alleging some of their residential dishwashers are faulty and prone to overheating.
“These dishwashers are dangerously defective in that their electrical systems overheat and catch fire, burning holes through the dishwasher, causing flooding, or causing the entire dishwasher and surrounding area to ignite and burn,” the Electrolux class action lawsuit alleges.
Plaintiffs Tony and Lauren Fitzgerald filed the Electrolux class action lawsuit Monday in Virginia federal court. They claim that they purchased a home in which a Frigidaire dishwasher manufactured by Electrolux was installed. In January 2013, they started the dishwasher before going to bed.
According to the Frigidaire dishwasher class action lawsuit, the Fitzgeralds were awakened in the middle of the night by their smoke detectors and they say their home smelled of burning plastic. Firefighters reportedly extinguished the fire, the source of which was identified as being under the dishwasher.
The Fitzgeralds claim that they not only suffered fire damage from the Frigidaire dishwasher defect, but their kitchen was also flooded because the fire melted a hole in the tub. According to the class action lawsuit, they contacted Electrolux about the issue but they did not reach an agreement. The Fitzgeralds claim that they would have paid less for their home or immediately replaced their Frigidaire dishwasher if they had known about the dangerous electrical defect.
According to the Electrolux class action lawsuit, the Fitzgeralds are not alone. They cite several consumer complaints about the defective electrical system in Electrolux dishwashers that were submitted to the Consumer Product Safety Commission and to ConsumerAffairs.com. These consumers reported that their Electrolux dishwashers had overheated and caused property damage through smoke, fire, and/or flooding.
The Fitzgeralds allege that Electrolux knew since at least 2007 that the dishwashers contained a defective electrical system that can create an “unreasonable risk of property damage and personal injury or death.” Electrolux reportedly issued a recall of some of its dishwashers in other countries due to a potential fire risk, but did not issue a similar recall for dishwashers in the United States.
By filing the Electrolux dishwasher class action lawsuit, the Fitzgeralds seek to represent a nationwide and a Virginia Class of consumers who purchased or acquired the allegedly defective Electrolux dishwashers as well as a Class of consumers who suffered property damage or other losses due to the alleged dishwasher defect.
The Electrolux class action lawsuit asserts claims for breach of implied warranty, strict liability – design defect, strict liability – failure to warn, negligence, negligent failure to warn, injunction and declaratory relief, unjust enrichment and fraudulent concealment.

Had the same thing happen to me the entire bottom of the diswasher melted out and burnt up my daughter woke me up and yelled my kitchen was on fire. I had set the timer to run during the night while everyone was asleep. Started to google if there was a recall. Can’t seem to find any model numbers. So glad tonight did not turn out worse and we caught it in time.
My Frigidaire dishwasher started to catch on fire melted all the wiring underneath it but luckily the electrical box said it was in kept the fire contained
We purchased an Electrolux dishwasher, model FFBD1831US, over a year ago for a guest cottage. It was purchased from Home Depot, picked up by our contractor, installed and never worked. We have been in constant contact with Electrolux and their authorized repair service for the last year over parts back order. To this date Electrolux has no ETA they tell us when the parts will be available and refuse to replace the unit. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PRODUCT. If there was ever a basis for a class action lawsuit this is it.

our new Electrolux dishwasher leaked every time the wash cycle ran. we set the wash to be at night and we didn’t notice the flooding until our floors started buckling. Called our warrenty company and they said Electrolux did not honor their warranties for flooding. We bought another dishwasher and replaced our kitchen and dining room flooring.
I have the pictured dishwasher and it leaks since day after warranty expired. The doors seals have been replaced 2 times and after short time it leaks again. It is a defect, it also smells like burning electronics when washing dishes. Have spoke to C.S. and they do nothing but offer for you to pay for a repair man from them at your cost. I would love to start a class action. This is fraud to continue to not replace defective equipment when it was a manufacturer defect and you are aware of it. Your taking peoples money and straight up lying to them

Bought my Frigidaire Electrolux dishwasher. Melted tub, but took 4 months for company to replace. Machine has never worked; dishes not clean. Now lower arm has burned & melted and company still refuses responsibility of defective machine!
I have a kitchen full of Electrolux appliances 1/2 of which don’t work properly. The dishwasher pump has been replaced once already and it once leaked all over my kitchen floor. The thing doesn’t work anymore due to the same error01 pump error. Google shows tons of consumer complaints on these dishwashers. Electrolux refuses to fix unless you pay an authorized repairman which is expensive and you have to go through them to buy the parts. These products cr 2006 and after were problematic.
