General Motors issued a recall for more than 81,000 of its model year 2025-2026 Chevrolet Equinox EV vehicles over concerns involving their pedestrian alert sound system.
The automaker said it is concerned the recalled Equinox EV vehicles’ pedestrian alert sound system “may not produce a sufficient change in volume” between the vehicle being stopped and moving at low speeds.
“A vehicle that does not emit sufficient sound may fail to alert pedestrians of a moving vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash or injury,” the GM recall notice states.
The GM recall says the issue prevents the Equinox EV vehicles from complying with federal motor vehicle safety standards regarding minimum sound requirements for hybrid and electric vehicles.
GM to offer free software update via a dealer or over-the-air
General Motors said it plans to remedy the recall issue by updating the vehicles’ body control module software, either via a dealer or through an over-the-air software update.
Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Feb. 2, 2026. Owners may contact GM customer service by phone at 1-800-222-1020 while referencing recall N252530690.
Affected vehicle owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236, or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
In related news, three consumers filed a class action lawsuit against GM last year over claims several vehicle models have faulty engines that can spontaneously fail.
