An Ohio woman recently filed a lawsuit against Monsanto, alleging that a link between Roundup and B-cell lymphoma led to her diagnosis with the serious disease.
According to the Roundup and B-cell lymphoma lawsuit, the plaintiff, Patricia H., was diagnosed with B-cell lymphoma, a kind of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, after years of exposure to Roundup while working on a farm and as a landscaper.
Patricia has used Roundup for decades, the lawsuit notes, beginning in the 1990s in her capacity as a farmer and a landscaper. She notes that, while using Roundup on a regular basis, she followed the warnings and safety procedures listed on the product.
The lawsuit alleges that, because of a link between Roundup and b-cell lymphoma, Patricia’s use of Roundup led to her eventual diagnosis in June 2015. Indeed, she alleges, Monsanto went so far as to actively conceal the link between Roundup and B-cell lymphoma and the risk this link poses to patients.
Patricia filed this Roundup and B-cell lymphoma lawsuit on multiple counts including negligence, design defect, failure to warn, and breach of implied warranties. Patricia’s husband, Charles H., also filed on one count of loss of consortium.
This lawsuit and many others like it claim that Monsanto has long misrepresented Roundup as safe when they have known for years of the link between Roundup and B-cell lymphoma. Certain common taglines of Roundup included “safer than table salt” and “practically non-toxic” to animals, the Roundup cancer lawsuit claims, but it also alleges that these safety claims are simply not true. In fact, the New York Attorney General actually filed a lawsuit against Monsanto for these kinds of statements, claiming they deceived customers about the actual safety of the product.
Background of Roundup Cancer
Monsanto’s popular weedkiller Roundup has been linked with a number of types of cancer, including B-cell lymphoma, a type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL).
Farm workers and even home gardeners are among the most at risk of any Roundup side effects, given the common usage of the product in these capacities. A number of farm workers and home gardeners have filed lawsuits against Monsanto with allegations of Roundup cancer, claiming that they were diagnosed with one of several kinds of cancer after using Roundup.
Studies published in the U.S., Canada, and Sweden have indicated a Roundup cancer link since as far back as 2001. The Environmental Protection Agency has even begun to suspect a Roundup cancer connection since the 1980s. Plus, a recent report published in March 2015 by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) conclude that glyphosate is linked with cancer. Glyphosate is known as the active ingredient in Roundup.
Cancers Linked With Roundup Use
Types of Roundup cancer that have so far been linked with the weedkiller include the following:
- Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
- Leukemia
- Multiple Myeloma
- B-cell Lymphoma
- Bone Cancer
- Renal Cell Carcinoma (kidney cancer)
- Other Cancers
