BMW recall overview:
- Who: BMW is recalling nearly 37,000 X3 SUVs from model years 2025-2026.
- Why: A software issue may cause the steering wheel to move unintentionally when the vehicle is stationary.
- Where: The BMW recall is active in the United States.
BMW has issued a recall for approximately 36,900 X3 SUVs from the 2025-2026 model years due to a potential steering issue.
The problem lies in the steering system software, which may not adequately detect a malfunction in the steering torque sensor, potentially allowing the steering wheel to move without driver input when the vehicle is stationary.
“Unintended steering wheel movement while the vehicle is stationary increases the risk of an injury and on the road, a crash,” the recall notice says.
BMW plans to address the issue by updating the steering system software, either through an over-the-air update or at a dealership, at no cost to the vehicle owners.
BMW X3 to receive software update, recall says
The BMW X3 recall notice highlights the risk associated with the steering issue, which could lead to dangerous situations if not addressed promptly. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has identified this as a significant safety concern, with the potential to cause accidents if the vehicle were to move unexpectedly.
BMW says it will update the steering system software on affected vehicles, free of charge, either over-the-air or through dealerships.
The company has announced that it will notify vehicle owners by mail starting Feb. 2, 2026.
Owners with questions or concerns are encouraged to contact BMW customer service at 800-525-7417 or the NHTSA vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236. Additionally, vehicle identification numbers (VINs) involved in this BMW recall will be searchable on the NHTSA website beginning Feb. 2, 2026.
BMW states it has not received any reports of injuries related to the BMW X3 recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
In related news, BMW North America recently issued a special consumer alert for almost 200,000 vehicles, including certain Toyota Supra models, due to a potential fire hazard linked to a corroding starter relay.
