AT&T class action lawsuitPayments from a 2013 class action lawsuit settlement with AT&T landline customers over third-party billing charges may be finally be on their way according to Court documents.

In a letter dated June 5, lead counsel John G. Jacobs of the law firm Jacobs Kolton, CHTD. told the Court that approximately 76 percent (128,048) of Class Members’ claims have been processed by the Settlement Administrator for a total dollar amount of over $48.7 million.

The money is from a class action lawsuit settlement reached in early 2013 over allegations that AT&T placed unauthorized charges from third-party companies on its landline customers’ bills and collected money for those charges.

AT&T denied any wrongdoing but agreed to offer landline customers who were billed for one of these unauthorized third-party charges a 100-percent refund. Some Class Members stand to receive hundreds of dollars while others may only see a few dollars, depending on how many charges they paid.

A California federal court approved the AT&T landline class action settlement on Nov. 27, 2013, but payments were delayed by an appeal filed by a single Class Member in December 2013. The Appellant subsequently withdrew his appeal and on March 19, 2014, the Court granted the Objector-Appellant’s unopposed voluntary motion to dismiss the appeal with prejudice. The dismissal now frees up the Settlement Administrator to begin processing claims and to send out payments to Class Members.

Class Members of the AT&T third-party billing settlement had until Dec. 2, 2013 to file a claim to receive a full refund of any unauthorized third-party charges they paid to AT&T. Class Members who requested a Billing Summary from AT&T to help them identify which unauthorized charges they paid had 30 days after they received the Summary to file a claim.

Jacobs told the Court that as of June 1, over 549,000 Billing Summary requests had been made, covering over 806,000 telephone numbers.

Jacobs’ update did not indicate when the Settlement Administrator planned on distributing payments to approved claimants, but Class Members are encouraged to keep checking the Settlement website www.ATTThirdPartyBillingSettlement.com for updates. The Court approved the Settlement Agreement on November 27, 2013. The Court’s final approval of the settlement was appealed by a single individual but that appeal has now been dismissed.
Approved claims are expected to be paid no later than May 2015. Current customers of AT&T will receive credits to their AT&T account. Former AT&T customers will be issued checks in the account holder’s name.
