Amazon Ring Video Doorbell Battery Class Action Lawsuit Overview:
- Who: Two Amazon Ring doorbell owners are suing Amazon.
- Why: The pair say that Amazon advertises its video doorbell as having a battery life of between six and 12 months but only lasts about two months.
- Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in an Illinois federal court.
Amazon Ring owners bought the doorbell thinking the battery would last six to 12 months; however, it only lasts about two months, according to a new class action lawsuit.
Plaintiffs Maria Lopez and Alexis Brown filed the class action complaint Dec. 25 in an Illinois federal court, alleging fraud, breach of warranty, negligent misrepresentation and violations of state consumer laws.
Ring does not have the six to 12 month battery life advertised, they claim. Instead this is a maximum duration, under minimal usage and in an ideal environment, the plaintiffs say.
“Most customers will not get two months of normal usage from a full battery charge by experiencing accelerated battery depletion,” the lawsuit alleges.
The plaintiffs say that under normal usage, a full battery can endure 750-1,000 events, which include pushing a button; motion trigger, including leaves blowing in the wind; recording; live viewing or speaking through the camera. Reports show that the average house may have up to 50 motion triggers a day.
Meanwhile the battery is also diminished by the cold.
“At 32 degrees Fahrenheit, the battery will not charge. Below this temperature, the battery may and often does fail,” the plaintiffs say.
They allege that the solar charger for the Ring device is also defectively designed with high failure rates.
Charging Doorbell Leaves Home Vulnerable For Several Hours, Plaintiffs Claim
The issue with the battery recharge is also inconvenient and unsafe, the plaintiffs say.
“During the several hours when the Product is unmounted from the wall to recharge the battery, a user’s home is vulnerable to the exact condition they purchased the Product to avoid – not being able to see who is at or near their door,” the lawsuit states.
They say the Ring is sold for a price premium compared to other similar products: between $60 and $300 per unit and $75 for the solar charger. The lawsuit says they should not and would not have paid this much if the product’s features had been correctly represented.
The plaintiffs are looking to represent a class of people in Illinois who bought a Ring doorbell, plus anyone in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Nevada, Rhode Island, North Dakota, Texas, New Hampshire, South Dakota and Oklahoma.
They’re seeking certification of the class, an injunction, damages, fees, costs and a jury trial
This is not the first time Amazon has been sued over Ring. In Sept., 2020, a class action lawsuit alleged Ring video doorbells violate privacy laws by collecting biometric data without consent and sharing it with law enforcement agencies.
Earlier that year, Ring LLC was hit with a class action lawsuit by consumers who claimed the home security company allowed hackers to access their system and spy on them in their own home.
