As hundreds of victims of campus gynecologist Dr. George Tyndall have filed a USC Tyndall lawsuit, legal help is available for others who have yet to come forward.
The University of Southern California, a preeminent private research university, is facing allegations of years of sexual misconduct by the gynecologist who worked for the student health center. Women claim that the physician used his power in order to conduct unwanted sexual contact and touching of students.
Many women say Dr. Tyndall grossly violated the trust they placed in him, as well as the power he had over them as their physician. Women say they were left naked or partially unclothed under his treatment in ways inconsistent with proper medical care, the lawsuit states.
Dr. George Tyndall began working for USC as part of the student health center in 1989, the plaintiffs say. Almost 16 women were examined each day. Additionally, during his time he was said to be the sole gynecologist of the clinic.
Chaperones and medical assistants have also been present in examination rooms while Dr. George Tyndall conducted his exams. The USC Tyndall lawsuit states that there were frequent instances in which chaperones entered exam rooms with him while he conducted pelvic examinations.
Nonetheless, witnesses report that nearly 50-100 patients have been photographed during these examinations. Full body exams were allegedly conducted. According to the USC Tyndall lawsuit, women would have to lie down on examination tables fully unclothed while he would slowly inspect patient body parts. During these examinations, the plaintiffs say he would frequently comment on patients’ bodies, the lawsuit states.
Additionally, Tyndall also made crude and unnecessary comments about the patient’s sex lives and their relationships with their significant others, the lawsuit states. Other remarks made was asking female patients about their first sexual experiences. The lawsuit states that “[s]uch inquiries were not medically related, but purely sexual in nature.”
While multiple complaints had been made to the university about Tyndall’s misconduct, no “meaningful action was taken to investigate, discipline or terminate Tyndall’s employment,” the plaintiffs claim.
Allegations against USC state that USC failed to terminate Tyndall’s employment because of his alleged misconduct. USC also allegedly engaged in a cover-up to hide his unwanted sexual contact against women for years, specifically by ignoring them while continuing to receive complaints.
What is more unfortunate is that for years Dr. George Tyndall preyed on young women in part because of their inexperience to the nature of gynecological examinations and how they run.
According to the lawsuit, “Many of these young women did not know that what Tyndall was doing during the examinations was not proper protocol and did not realize he was engaging in sexual misconduct, sexually violating them and taking advantage of them,” it states.
The USC Tyndall Lawsuit is Case No. BC720105 in the Superior Court of the State of California for the County of Los Angeles- Central District.
