Lawsuit Claims That Active Ingredient In Roundup Herbicide Can Cause CancerMonsanto Company is facing a new Roundup lawsuit alleging serious glyphosate side effects, with the claimant alleging the weedkiller caused her to develop non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma due to its carcinogenic effects.

The plaintiff says these serious glyphosate side effects were reportedly not mentioned on Roundup’s warning label, which allegedly led the claimant to believe the product was reasonably safe. This Roundup lawsuit was filed by a woman from Louisiana, who says she was exposed to glyphosate side effects on a regular basis.

Plaintiff Adrianne M. reportedly used Roundup on a regular basis for years, and had used the weedkiller for its intended purpose on her personal property. Adrianne was recently diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2017, and has been contending with the disease ever since.

Adrianne opted to file legal action against Monsanto after discovering that glyphosate side effects have been linked to cancer.

Overview of Glyphosate Side Effects

Glyphosate is the main ingredient of Roundup, which works by inhibiting the enzyme 5-enolpyruvylshikimic acid-3-phosphate synthase and interferes with the genetic pathways of certain invasive plant species. This causes the affected plants to die.

Due to how effective glyphosate is, Roundup has become one of the most widely used weedkillers in the world with commercial nurseries, suburban laws, parks, golf courses and yards. However, some researchers believe that glyphosate side effects could be carcinogenic.

In March 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) released a report stating glyphosate and four other pesticides were linked to cancer. The report was announced after several studies were published in the United States, Canada and Sweden that indicated glyphosate could induce non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma:

  • Canadian study was published by the American Association for Cancer Research in November 2001, which found that men had developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after being exposed to the chemical under 10 years.
  • United States study was published in the Occupational and Environmental Medicine journal, which concluded that glyphosate side effects were “potentially carcinogenic” and were associated with “increased NHL incidence.”
  • Swedish study was published in the International Journal of Cancer in October 2008, which found that the risk of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma doubled in less than 10 years after glyphosate exposure.

Each of these studies were conducted to observe glyphosate side effects and found that patients were exposed to a greater risk of cancer. More specifically, researchers started studying glyphosate and other pesticides after finding that a number of farmers had been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) started speculating a correlation in the 1980s which helped start the research investigation. The cancers that glyphosate side effects have been linked to include, but are not limited to:

    • Non Hodgkin’s lymphoma
    • Leukemia
    • Multiple myeloma
    • B-cell lymphoma
    • Bone cancer
    • Renal cell carcinoma (kidney cancer)

Monsanto has been allegedly aware for years that glyphosate side effects could cause cancer after a lawsuit was filed in 1996 stated that the company concealed Roundup’s toxicity from the public.

This Roundup Lawsuit is Case No. 4:18-cv-01645-AGF, in the U.S. District Court of the Eastern District of Missouri, Eastern Division.
