CBS Shareholders Took Hit After Les Moonves Sexual Assault Accusations

U.S. sexual assault statistics are heartbreaking, staggering, and reprehensible.

Since the start of the #MeToo movement, a light has been shone on the dark corners of the lives of celebrities, people in power, and average citizens alike.

The National Sexual Violence Resource Center shares sexual assault statistics that prove predators and their prey come from all walks of life. For every Harvey Weinstein, there are many more anonymous perpetrators who are able to commit sexual harassment, sexual assault, and other unwanted advances without repercussions.

One in five women and 2.6% of men in the U.S. will be raped in their lifetime, according to a 2015 summary report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

According to the report, 43.6% of U.S. women and 24.8% of men in the U.S. experienced some form of contact sexual violence in their lifetime — or, nearly half of women and a quarter of men.

The victim knows the perpetrator in eight out of ten rape cases, according to U.S. Department of Justice sexual assault statistics cited by the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN). This is the sexual assault statistic that seems to defy logic, because people tend to believe if you know a person, you can trust that person.

Former USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University physician Dr. Larry Nassar was a known, trusted, and respected physician for years, yet was recently convicted and sentenced to prison for sexually assaulting more than 250 young people in his care.

In a recently released videotape that shows Nassar under questioning by the Michigan State University Police Department in 2014 and in 2016, Nassar attempts to blame his victims and dismiss the sexual assault allegations against him by touting his highly respected reputation as a sports physician.

Michigan State University has agreed to a $500 million settlement with Nassar’s victims, many of whom may not have yet come forward.

Another previously well-respected doctor, former USC gynecologist Dr. George Tyndall, has been accused of sexually assaulting more than 50 of his patients. Authorities believe many more women were abused by Tyndall, due to records that indicate he examined more than 20,000 patients over his years at USC.

The more people who come forward with their stories of sexual assault by figures like Tyndall and Nassar, the stronger the case will be. In order to ensure that abusers are criminally prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and to make sure that the organizations that may have failed to protect those in their care are held responsible, every victim’s story must be heard.

Sexual assault statistics indicate that rape is the most underreported crime, because more than 2 out of every 3 sexual assaults are never reported to the authorities, according to U.S. Department of Justice statistics cited by RAINN.

The reasons victims do not report the crime vary; they might fear retaliation from the attacker or be afraid they won’t be believed if they do report the crime. Among children, boys face a high degree of unreported sexual violence, according to studies. In adulthood, men may continue to fear coming forward about abuse.

Filing a sexual abuse lawsuit

A number of states have recently updated their sexual abuse laws, allowing more people than ever to come forward with their own experiences with sexual abuse and finally hold those responsible accountable. Many states have also enacted lookback windows for those who were previously barred from litigation by the statute of limitations, including New York, California, and more.

Lawsuits are being filed against youth organizations, religious institutions, sports organizations, public and private schools, and more.

If you were subjected to sexual assault by a person in an athletic, school, medical, or employment setting like Dr. Tyndall or Dr. Nassar, you could be eligible to participate in a class action lawsuit investigation and be entitled to compensation.

Filing a lawsuit can be a daunting prospect, so Top Class Actions has laid the groundwork for you by connecting you with an experienced attorney. Consulting an attorney can help you determine if you have a claim, navigate the complexities of litigation, and maximize your potential compensation.
