gardening woman with red and white flowersMonsanto Company is facing a Roundup wrongful death lawsuit from a grieving widower alleging his wife died as a direct result of being exposed to the weedkiller. This Roundup wrongful death lawsuit alleges the manufacturer knew their product’s main ingredient, glyphosate, was carcinogenic and presented serious health risks.

Plaintiff Stephen D. is filing this Roundup wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of his wife Mary D., claiming the weedkiller caused her to develop non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Stephen alleges that like millions of other Americans, Mary used Roundup for personal gardening reasons and had no reason to believe she was at any risk for developing cancer.

According to the Roundup wrongful death lawsuit, Mary used Roundup on a regular basis in 2000 and followed all instructions provided by the product’s label. During all times relevant Mary relied on the information and marketing materials provided by Monsanto Company, which reportedly did not contain any mention of potential cancer development.

Even with Mary’s diligence, she still developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and eventually died from the disease. Stephen says he has been forced to contend with life after her death. He later filed this Roundup wrongful death lawsuit after discovering Monsanto Company either knew or should have known about their product’s carcinogenic nature since 1996.

During this time, Monsanto faced a Roundup claim filed by the New York attorney general for deceptive marketing practices and pointed out troubling statements like Roundup was “safer than salt” and “practically non toxic” to animals.

Overview of Roundup Cancer Correlation

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) first suspected a correlation in the 1980s which spurred years of research. Researchers began to suspect a correlation between glyphosate, along with other pesticides, to cancer after noting a number of farmers had been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

The correlation to cancer is linked to Roundup’s main ingredient, glyphosate, which is a broad spectrum herbicide that is used to kill weeds and grasses that are known to interfere with crops.

While glyphosate has been a successful weedkiller for many years, it has recently been linked to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and other cancers including:

  • Leukemia
  • Multiple myeloma
  • B-cell lymphoma
  • Bone cancer
  • Renal cell carcinoma (kidney cancer)
  • Skin tumors
  • Pancreatic islet cell tumors

This alleged correlation gained public attention in March 2015 when the International Agency for Research (IARC) concluded that glyphosate was potentially carcinogenic. The IARC report also found that four other pesticides could cause cancer, with the announcement coming after several studies from the United States, Canada and Sweden were published.

One of these studies was published in the Occupational and Environmental Medicine journal, which found that glyphosate and certain other pesticides were “potentially carcinogenic” and were “associated with increased NHL [non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma] incidence.” The other studies found similar results, which furthered the concern.

Even though this correlation was potentially deadly to consumers, plaintiffs like Stephen claim Monsanto Company allegedly failed to warn the general public. Stephen claims that Mary would never have used Roundup if she had known about the product’s alleged correlation to cancer.

This Roundup Wrongful Death Lawsuit is Case No. 4:18-cv-00602-PLC, in the U.S. District Court of Eastern Missouri.
