A settlement has been proposed in a class action lawsuit alleging Sephora USA Inc. discriminated against Chinese/Asian customers by deactivating their Beauty Insider accounts without notice during Sephora’s largest online sale event in 2014.
If you were a Sephora customer with a Sephora Beauty Insider account with VIB or VIB Rouge status as of Nov. 4, 2014, you may be entitled to benefits from this Sephora class action settlement.
The Beauty Insider class action lawsuit alleges Sephora discriminatorily deactivated from its website thousands of U.S. customers whose customer accounts had email addresses with China-based service providers, such as @qq.com, @126.com and @163.com.
By deactivating these accounts, Sephora prevented these users from participating in its annual 20 percent discount sale available to VIB and VIB Rouge customers, the Sephora class action lawsuit alleges. This annual sale was reportedly scheduled to begin on Nov. 4, 2014.
The Beauty Insider class action lawsuit asserts Sephora took the action of deactivating accounts with China-based email addresses “based on the ill-founded and discriminatory belief that all Chinese/Asian customers abuse discount sales to engage in bulk purchasing for re-sale.”
The plaintiffs allege that more than 95 percent of consumers whose accounts were deactivated were residing in the United States, and were not bulk buyers seeking to re-sell Sephora products. However, they reportedly lost their VIB and VIB status as a result of the deactivation. This loss of VIB status caused them to lose benefits such as coupons, free shipping and free beauty consultations.
In order to restore their VIB status, they would have to spend an additional $350 within a year to obtain VIB status or $1,000 to obtain VIB Rouge status.
Sephora denies any wrongdoing but has agreed to settle the Beauty Insider class action lawsuit to avoid the burden and expense of ongoing litigation.
The Sephora Beauty Insider class action settlement was preliminarily approved on Jan. 26, 2016.

My account was deactivated. I lost all my points. But I figured it was just a fluke and re signed up. Then when I used my card again in stores it was under a completely different name
I did not receive an 8 digit claim ID number. However I’ve had a Sephora beauty insider account for about 4-5 years I believe.
Can I still file a claim?
I didn’t either. But it allowed me to print a copy of the claim form
Something tells me neither one of you will receive any money from this because you are not from China and never had e-mail addresses that were composed to chinese characters. Just my wild guess.
I agree with your wild guess. Also if they have had theirbVIB account for the last 4 or 5 years than that means you were obviously NOT deactivated.
Thankfully this should be easy for Sephora to know? very specifically, who was deactivated and disregard any false claims.
What does China have to do with this?? The lawsuit was filed in California, Just saying…….
Stupid comment on my account, my bad I misunderstood what I read. Red faced feeling like idiot.
