Chrysler class action lawsuitOn February 9, Chrysler Group LLC was hit with a proposed alternator recall class action lawsuit, alleging the carmaker does not have enough parts to repair and replace the thousands of Chrysler vehicles recently recalled for having a dangerous and faulty alternator and additionally has refused to compensate consumers for the cost of rental cars.

Lead plaintiff Robert Madatyan claims in the class action lawsuit that back in October 2014, Chrysler issued a recall notice for all of their brand name vehicles featuring defective 160 amp alternators that could catch on fire and shut down the engine while in drive. This Chrysler alternator recall notice simultaneously informed car owners and lessees that the parts needed to fix the defect would take about six months to obtain. During this recall waiting period, the automaker has asked consumers to refrain from driving the affected Chrysler vehicles or parking them near structures.

However, the alternator recall class action lawsuit alleges Chrysler has refused to pay for consumers’ rental cars, despite that fact that Chrysler car owners and lessees have been told by the automaker to not drive the defective cars.

According to the Chrysler alternator recall class action lawsuit, “Chrysler should, among other things, be required to furnish or pay for replacement vehicles until Chrysler fixes the defective vehicles and should pay damages and restitution to the owners and lessees of the vehicles for loss of use, loss of market value and other financial losses,” Madatyan claims.

Back in 2011, Chrysler allegedly began to design, manufacture, market, and sell the Chrysler vehicles with the defective alternators. According to the alternator recall class action lawsuit, there were about 434,581 Dodge Challengers, Durangos, and Chargers, as well as Chrysler 300 and Jeep Grand Cherokees that were outfitted with the defective alternator. These defective 160 amp alternators allegedly cause these Chrysler cars to shut down and catch on fire. In some cases, the defective alternators would not completely shut down the car, but would then cause electrical failures, affecting the systems that allow drivers to steer and brake.

According to the Chrysler alternator recall class action lawsuit, the Chrysler alternator failure could occur without warning, leaving drivers without time to avoid traffic dangers. Additionally, the alternator defect can also cause a car to catch on fire even if it is off and parked. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has reported that hundreds of Chrysler vehicle owners and lessees have filed complaints with the agency outlining the numerous problems associated with the defective alternators.

Madatyan brings several allegations against Chrysler, including claims of breach of express warranty, breach of the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act, breach of Implied Covenant of Good Faith and Fair Dealing, breach of Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, and finally one count of violating the California Unfair Competition Law.

The plaintiff seeks to represent himself in this Chrysler alternator recall class action lawsuit, as well as a Class of all owners and lessees of the following Chrysler vehicles: 2011-2014 Dodge Challengers, Chargers, and Durangos; 2011-2014 Chrysler 300; and 2012-2014 Jeep Grand Cherokees.

    2011 Dodge Durango stalled out and was left on side of road. When we went back to get it back to my house while trying to start it it caught fire and burned so badly I lost a lot of important things in it but more importantly my son who was looking under hood when it exploded hair caught fire. Have reported to Chrysler but not heard anything back.

    My Chrysler 200 2012 caught on fire as i was driving home from work. I just pulled off interstate and smelled something funny. I pulled off lifted the hood saw flames called 911. I was going to buy chicken feed after work and lost my car to a blazing inferno. I was terrified

      Same here my girlfriend’s 2011 caught on fire aswell just yesterday if it wasn’t for her fast acting and that she had bought a fire extinguisher for her car things might have gotten out of hand fast. 1/22/24

    my 2012 Grand Cherokee died on me in a McDonald’s drive thru. freezing cold, pouring rain, my window was down and I had a sick baby in the back seat. had it towed to TWO different mechanics bc the first one said it needed to go to a dealer. They “replaced” the recalled alternator, but not without charging me over $500 for a new battery which the faulty alternator fried. Pick up the car and it dies on me AGAIN not even 10 miles later. Exact same problem, but I was driving down the road and my brakes and steering went out. Thank God i knew what was happening when my dash screen went out and other lights started flashing and beeping. i am furious. Been without a car for a week now. Still no word yet on the second malfunction but Jeep does not believe they should be liable for the $500 cost of the new battery i had to buy. i will NEVER own another Jeep in my life and will convince everyone i know of the same. The dealer says the only thing he can figure is that the replacement alternator they were provided with was also defective. Dont even wanna put my kids in this car….

    where do i find this recall i have been having electrical issues happening no check engine no codes maintenance done on time. My car did kick back as described above snapped my neck back pretty hard 2006 Dodge Charger RT 5.7 hemi. My car dies 2 times had to be towed just had battery put in today also motor mounts but these stories are similar to issues i have been having

    Hello.
    We boaght a 2013 durango from crystal xhrysler in palm springs.
    Within first month dueango started stalling.
    After 5 trips to service dept no repair and told they dont kniw tge problem.?
    I found the SECOND altenator recal t36 just yesterday 12/ 19/2018 saying a bad diod abd xalled dodge…STILL NO HELP!!!.
    I verified part number was in fact one of the recalled units but my vehicle vin # shows up nothing per dodge ???
    I’m BEYOND FRUSTRATED.
    PLEASE HELP.

    Jeep Grand Cherokee caught on fire while driving and was diagnosed by Jeep dealer as faulty alternator. Case was sent to Jeep Special Investigations Unit. You can only contact them by email, the Jeep Customer Care center wouldn’t give me a phone number. Noone from Jeep has replied, though we all could have been killed. I can’t believe this b.s.

    I have a 2012 Dodge Durango with 56,000 miles. Second owner and have owned it since December 2012 with 13,000 miles on it. This past summer we took a vacation to South Carolina (fort Jackson) for our sons graduation from basic training. On the return trip we ended up stranded 60 miles from home with an electrical problem. Turned out to be the alternator, which fried the battery, totally integrated power module and bcm. I ended up with a bill for $2,300 for all the parts and labor. 2 months after this happened I received a recall notice, so I called and was told all the repairs will be covered and they should start paying the claims in January of 2018. I wait until January to call and am told they need all the receipts, which I have. I called in Feb, March, April and May each time I request a call from a manager, which only happens in May after I called the corporate office. I am told they have everything and will be sending a check for all items replaced very soon. Today I get a check for$485, the price of just the alternator. WTF????? What happened to customer service. I’m sure if I went to buy a vehicle from them they wouldn’t want to wait a year for my first payment. Please let me know who to contact for the class action lawsuit. Seems the only way these ASSCLOWNS are going to learn. CUSTOMER ARE NOT TO BE CONTINUALLY LIED TOO!!!!!

      I went through pretty much the same thing. My alternator died and took out the other parts, before I realized that there was a recall for the alternator. So, first I bought a battery, that still didn’t work, so I bought an alternator, then took it to the dealer, who said the PCM was fried. I paid over $1600 in parts and Chrysler refused to reimburse me; said the “vehicle is no longer under warranty”, which had nothing to do with the alternator recall on the 2013 Dodge Durango Crew. I think we need to start a Class action suit against Chrysler for this.
