Jeep class action lawsuitFiat Chrysler has been hit with a proposed class action lawsuit alleging the Uconnect infotainment system installed in certain Jeep vehicles are filled with glitches that render it defective.

Manufactured by Fiat Chrysler, Uconnect is a next-generation in-vehicle connectivity systems specifically designed for Chrysler, Dodge, FIAT, Jeep and Ram vehicles.

The software includes a voice-activated, in-dash infotainment system that provides an integrated, radio, phone, navigation and entertainment system, complete with various apps.

In June 2015, plaintiff Duane Kiser of Kentucky purchased a model-year 2015 Jeep Renegade with the Uconnect feature, allegedly paying an additional $1,245 for the system, but he claims the software doesn’t work properly.

“Plaintiff specifically purchased this Vehicle, with this Uconnect version, because it provided a navigation feature, a Weather Map mobile app, and a Wi-Fi ‘hot spot,’ through which Plaintiff could obtain internet access,” the Fiat Chrysler Uconnect complaint states.

According to Kiser, since he purchased the vehicle, the Uconnect Weather Map mobile app has not worked at all, the GPS navigation system has been out-of-date and has repeatedly failed during use, and the Wi-Fi hot spot has also failed repeatedly.

“Plaintiff has taken the Vehicle to Grayson Chrysler Jeep Dodge, a dealership in Grayson, Kentucky, for attempted service and repair of the Uconnect system on no fewer than eight occasions, resulting in the loss of use of his vehicle for approximately 75 days,” the FCA Uconnect class action purports.

Yet, despite numerous visits to the dealership to fix the allegedly defective Uconnect, and even with a replacement Uconnect system, Kiser says the software still fails to work properly.

The class action further claims that “after his last visit to the dealership, the service advisor informed Plaintiff that, according to a regional service manager employed by Defendant, there was no problem with Plaintiff’s Vehicle because all Jeep Renegades with the Uconnect system version 6.5/RA4 would fail in the same way.”

Kiser alleges that Fiat Chrysler touts its reliability of the Uconnect system, but that the system actually falls short of FCA’s representation and instead cheats consumers by depriving them of the system they paid for.

“[Defendant] designed, developed, engineered, and programmed a proprietary voice-activated, in-dash infotainment system known as Uconnect … at least one of the Uconnect systems available on the model-year 2015 Jeep Renegade, version 6.5/RA4, does not work as intended, marketed, or warranted by Defendant,” the complaint states.

Kiser brings this action on behalf of himself and a proposed Class of similarly-situated purchasers and lessees of the 2015 Jeep Renegade in which the Uconnect version 6.5/RA4 was installed. He contends that he and other Class Members paid more for the vehicles than they would have paid had they been aware of the defects or they simply would not have purchased the vehicles at all.

He is bringing forth specific claims that Fiat Chrysler violated the Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act; Kentucky Consumer Protection Act; West Virginia Consumer Credit and Protection Act; Unfair, False, and Deceptive Trade Practices; Breach of Express Warranty; and Breach of Common Law Warranty.

Kiser is seeking punitive and compensatory damages, as well as attorney’s fees and court costs.

The plaintiff is represented by Matthew T. Lockaby of Lockaby PLLC.

The Jeep Defective Uconnect Class Action Lawsuit is Duane Kiser v. FCA US LLC, Case No. 0:16-cv-00072, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern Division of Kentucky, Northern Division at Ashland.

I have a 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited I purchased in Dec 2020. Went to set up WiFi to use on a trip next week and it won’t work. Was told after a few phone calls that AT&T controls that system and they can’t get the system to work since Dec. Thats over 5 Months that a part of this vehicle hasn’t worked that I paid to have.

I have a 2017 chrysler 300 C and have many issues with the uconnect system. Hoping something is done in the lawsuits soon.

  3. Lorraine Seidel says:

Same story here. Bought a 2019 in March and 6 weeks later the whole radio gps went black. Told by the Jeep dealer first that they never heard of this and now that it could be next year 2021 before any parts are sent from China to correct it. They agree to fixbIF AND WHEN the replacement shows up. Unimaginable and unacceptable. I travel 400 miles per wk and need navigation and radio. This is not okay !

Similar issues on brand new Pacifica 2020. Wifi hotspot not working every other day. Bluetooth freezes the whole system, so you can’t even use AC. Class action should be continued.

I have a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. My entire radio and all that functions from the uconnect system fried when I did the update… that I was required to do because my screen went black and nothing worked!
I have been in an ongoing battle with Chrysler and will not stop until my radio is replaced. That is what I was told needed to happen. My dealership has been great. However, they can’t replace my radio without written consent from Chrysler because Chrysler has screwed them in the past. I have also been lied too during a phone call with Chrysler. Laughed at by their customer service rep and given the runaround when I call. The have absolute worst customer service I have ever heard.

  5. Cheri says:

My 2015 Cherokee system has been erratic since I bought it. Taken it to different dealerships, and most scratch their head. One dealership did replace fuses and that helped for awhile. Now that it is out of warranty, they want to diagnose it for $132. And from other posts, the fix is a new unit, costing about $750. Very disappointed in them.

I have a new 2018 Dodge Journey and the voice recognition will not work with my mobile phone. It’s brand new just purchased Jan 31. It’s been at dealership most of the time I’ve owned it’

    1. Christine Farrow says:

I have a 2019 Grand Jeep and since I took delivery in March 2019 the Uconnect feature has not worked. I have been given the run arounds by the dealership, Sirus and FCA. It’s beyond frustrating and I can’t seem to get a straight. I wish I could give this vehicle back. Worse purchase EVER!!

      1. Kellie says:

My 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee’s Uconnect does not give the proper Navigation. The dealer will not fix it, states there is no fix to it. Chrysler Today 9/18/19 states they will not do anything at all. There is supposed to be an update in Dec 2019. I bought the vehicle in March of 2019. I bought this vehicle for the GPS. The service department at the dealer states that there could be unsold vehicles on the lot, and they will sell them with a Faulty Uconnect device. This is Fraud!! So upset and disappointed.

      2. DAO says:

I have a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee and subscribed to Uconnect. In December 2019, I received notification a navigation software system upgrade was required. I successfully performed the upgrade; however, the navigational system, including map is now totally inoperable. Got no satisfactory response from Uconnect nor from Here Technologies, other than agreeing to refund my purchase cost. Jeep dealership tell me the only resolve they can suggest is to provide me with a new radio. I was told today, the 2017 radios are on back order and they have no indication when the radios will be available. Like you, I’m not happy with my purchase. Problem is, those of us having issues with the navigation systems have vehicles that have lost their resale value unless the issues with the system can be successfully resolved!!

      3. Trish Markley says:

Exact same thing happened to me. I bought my Grand Cherokee in March of 2019 and have had problems with the Uconnect from day one. June 2020 still fighting to get it fixed, they just keep saying wait for the next update.

        1. Elisalynn Clark says:

I purchased my used 2015 jeep grand cherokee in March 2023, started having a lot of issues with my uconnect was told needed to do the update, followed their instructions 100% and I got the same error as everyone else has at 67% of the update and now I’m stuck in the loop and have no way to use my uconnect/stereo. I’ve tried everything online for the “fix” even tried to go back to the previous update/version and nothing has worked.

  7. Ken Chenis says:

Same exact issue in my 2016 RAM 1500 Lariat – Uconnect Via Mobile never works, and if you let them do the software update, it actually remove the via Mobile functionality (which I paid extra for!).

  8. Candance Toscano says:

My entire nav system in my 2016 Jeep Wrangler crashed. Jeep won’t cover the cost to replace it.

  9. Justin Dickinson says:

Same issues with my 2016 Fiat 500x!
