Citibank NA agreed to pay $1.55 million to settle a class action lawsuit stemming over allegations that the banking giant listened-in on customer phone calls made to its toll-free line, without informing callers that they were being recorded.
Plaintiff Ramona Edery filed the Citibank lawsuit after making a call to the toll-free number in order to open an account. She claims to have discussed private financial information during that phone call and only later discovered that the conversation had been recorded.
Edery alleged Citibank violated California’s Invasion of Privacy Act and referred to a state Supreme Court ruling that found customers are used to being told about any recording or monitoring at the beginning of a phone call so she had a reasonable expectation that the information she shared was not being recorded.
Those who wish to object or opt-out of the class action settlement must do so by July 28, 2016.
Who’s Eligible
Class Members include all California residents who participated in one or more phone conversations with Citibank at 800-745-1534 and were recorded or monitored without being informed between Apr. 3, 2013 and May 15, 2013.
Potential Award
$350 – $2,500
The Citibank Settlement Fund of $1.55 million will be divided among Class Members who file valid and timely Claim Forms after court expenses are paid off. The Settlement Administrator estimates that this will give each Class Member between $350 and $2,500, depending on the number of claims.

120 thoughts onCitibank Call Recording Class Action Lawsuit Settlement
I recieved a ck from CITI saying something about a refund for certain expedited payments fees I had paid… its the result of a agreement between Department Stores National Bank and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau..should I cash this ..was there a lawsuit and is it settled? I didn;t know and didn’t file anything
Question:
Received my check, and did an on-line deposit from an Image I took, but the bank’s system had some problem with the Image quality. Took another higher-resolution Image, but then the Bank’s system said it “had already been deposited”.
It in fact was not deposited, and never credited to my account. Called the bank, and they said once a check was entered in their system, it could not be re-entered again. They suggested voiding the check, returning it and asking for a new check to be issued.
So that was done, and the original un-cashed check marked VOID and returned to RUST with a detailed cover letter requesting a replacement. That was done October 31 by mail. No reply yet and no replacement check.
Is this normal, or should I contact RUST ?
You should definitely contact the settlement administrator to inquire if they received your request. Good Luck!
Is there any other ways you contact the claims administration besides mail? Can we email?
