neurontinThe manufacturers of the drug Neurontin reached a $325 million class action lawsuit settlement Wednesday over allegations they fraudulently marketed the prescription drug, which is used to treat seizures, restless leg syndrome, and pain caused by shingles. If approved, third-party payers of the drug will be eligible to claim a cash award from the Neurontin class action settlement, announced Friday.

The Neurontin settlement marks the end to a nearly 10-year-old class action lawsuit battle in which plaintiffs, who included both direct purchasers and third-party payers, accused Pfizer of delaying generic versions of Neurontin and promoted the drug for unapproved uses. Pfizer reached a $190 million Neurontin class action settlement with direct purchasers of the drug (consumers) in April.

The plaintiffs in the Neurontin class action lawsuit alleged that Pfizer delayed competition from generic producers of the drug, gabapentin anhydrous, which Pfizer sold under the name Neurotin, by exercising a monopoly over the medicine. The plaintiffs alleged that Pfizer’s actions included illegal off-label promotion, manipulating the patent application process, filing bogus patent lawsuits, and engaging in fraud, which the plaintiffs claim amounted to violations of the Sherman Act.

Additionally, the plaintiffs claimed they had to overpay for Neurontin. In 2004, following an investigation by the U.S. Justice Department, Pfizer pleaded guilty to criminal illegal marketing charges involving Neurontin and was hit with a $430 million fine, sparking the Neurotin class action lawsuit.

The third-party payor plaintiffs included insurance companies, health care benefit providers, union health and welfare plans, and others. The third-party plaintiffs filed a motion for preliminary approval of the Neurontin settlement, which will provide cash awards to third-party payors in the United States who purchased, paid for, administered and/or reimbursed for Neurontin sold by the Defendants or gabapentin sold by Greenstone LLC.

The Neurontin class action settlement reached in April will apply to consumers in the United States that purchased Neurontin from Pfizer at any time during the period of December 11, 2002 through August 31, 2008, and who have purchased generic gabapentin.

Details on how to file a claim for both the consumer Neurontin class action settlement and the third-party payor settlement were not immediately available, but the settlement website for the third-party payors will be www.NeurontinSettlement.com, according to court documents. The site was not live at press time.

I have been on this drug for 30 years I’d lost my teeth memory went downhill so bad and I need to know does anybody know if it causes loss of eyesight my vision is and has been deteriorating rapidly I’ve never been told that the side effects are anywhere near this that I need to know how we can make this company pay for what it has kept from us and has done to us and whoever wrote about their teeth rotting from the inside out they are 100% telling the truth that is exactly what happened to my teeth I was chewing a role in my back molar broke off that was the first sign of trouble. However not until today did I even know that this was related to taking Gabapentin or neurontin same drug same terrible side effects.

First off, hello everyone, I was watching a show on PBS and looked up my drug NEURONTIN and could not believe what I read. I had a dr. from in the 90s try this drug on me, at first it worked good at controlling my seizures, but the side effects included and still do, headaches all the time (plus much asperin)watery eyes like I’m crying, depression 1-2 days a week, repeat sentences after completing to first one,, react to certain temperatures differently, act as a child in laughter and talking (sometimes). I can’t do anything in the sun without a hat on. Suntan, walk outside, go outside on a job in the sun or stay in a freezer for more than 15 seconds, yes seconds , I have to leave the freezer quickly. My God, if I was told these side effects in the 90s, when they tried it on me down south, I would have never tried it. Now I understand why the Dr. That prescribed this drug retired shortly after I tried it. He probably new what was going to happen to me. Another side affect is keeping my head covered to keep my head warm enough in the cold. I may get attacks if under 55 degrees and over 80 degrees. That is when I have on watch out. My God, I wish I was told these things when I was down south and they tried this on me. I moved up north and I have a 3 day EEG test coming up, plus I had a 45 min. EEG already. I am definitely going to speed up an appointment to speak with my neurologist and possibly try a different drug/new drug. I forgot to mention, I’m always very hungry and have gained 30 lbs. over time. I tried going off of it once and actually lost 30 lbs of water weight. I was explained that it is like twisting a rope or squeezing out water from clothes very tightly, to keep the water out and the water is actually seizures. My brain is being tightened so bad to prevent a seizure, I’m actually hurting myself. Do I really need to put up with this. Everyone, ask questions to your neurologist until you get an answer, then look the drug up and it’s side effects, to see if the truth is being told to you.

  4. Isauro Garza says:

Help! Gabapentin is horrible. 4 months after discontinuing I am still experiencing severe dry mouth and swollen throat side effects something needs to be done about this horrible drug.

  5. Albert says:

My doctor prescribed Gabapentin without telling me the side effects. Now, I have been begging to get off from this medication because I sleep alot, weakness is worse and also my heart rate goes down to 49 and I cannot remember simple things. Each time I tried to reduce the dosage, I feel very very sick. What should I do?

    1. Sonja Smith says:

I got diagnosed with fibromyalgia 2 years ago (I’m 29 female) my mental health got very bad due to severe chronic pain and the 50+symptoms fibro causes. I ended up in a mental health facility and was forced to take gabapentin 300 3x a day, I was extremely dizzy, chest pains out of it, much more side effects but it helped my nerve pain.
I’ve lowered it to 500 a day and am starting to feel the pain, i think my nerve pain is worse now (which I’ve read online it gets worse before it gets better) some people say it’s hard to get off of and I see why now. Others even say it’s worse than opioids to get off of.
I still have constant headaches, chest pains, nerve pain, fatigue, sleep issues, temperature intolerances, tremors, shaking, parasthesia and the symptoms keep going and are mixing with my fibro symptoms idk what is what anymore. I’m also on other meds…. It’s messed up the pharmaceutical companies refuse to upgrade and make new meds with less side effects all cuz it would cost a lot to make it/patent it and would take awhile before they can break even and start making profits. Their greed makes me sicker than I already am, I wish there were more natural options that might actually work and have at least side effects

  6. Sparks says:

No one should take this stuff. The potential side effects are not worth it. Damn stuff scrambled my brain so badly that I went from having had an extensive vocabulary since childhood, to literally stuttering, because I couldn’t remember even the simple one syllable words I needed to express what I was thing. One afternoon I had to pull over a few miles from home, because I couldn’t remember how to get back to the home I’d lived in for 20 years. The stuff was appallingly expensive, and nothing for my IC pain.

I took myself off the crap immediately, and changed doctors. I would literally prefer to die than ever take that poison again.

    1. Stormyweather says:

I’m currently on them and have been having progressive memory problems like you describe, also numbness and mobility problems which I highly suspect maybe linked to gabapentin.Im starting to taper off them and just wondered how you have recovered as it’s very difficult living like this.I hope life has been much better for you

  7. Deborah Jenkins says:

I was prescribed Gabapentin for fibromyalgia. It rotted all of my teeth from the inside out and they all broke off at gum line.

    1. Jack says:

Wow! Mine did the same! Had no idea.

    2. Diane Broshears says:

I understand your broken teeth problem after 2 surgeries shoulder and knee (failed). I was put on gabapentin for 2 years recovery for pain. I lost half my teeth they dissolved shockingly, I had a bout with suicide attempt and was hospitalized, I am not a depressed person at all. I like who I Am, I got dry mouth and restless leg syndrome that continues till today. So yes this is a very bad drug. My daughter is currently prescribed it now for her dog. I have tried to warn her but I guess the pet industry can’t hear complaints from animals.

    1. john says:

Your side effects are listed on the paperwork as with all drugs. We are unique and react differently to drugs so your side effects are unique to you and not to the population at large.
The law suit was about fraudulent marketing and had nothing to do with with efficacy or adverse side effect.

Next time READ THE LABEL, talk to the Dr or pharmacist, goggle it, etc.
The documented adverse side effects are pretty scary and I am watching for them very closely.

      1. Sparks says:

Stuff it you arrogant prig. The Dr should EXPLAIN the hazards before giving you the poison in the first place. IT’S THEIR DAMN JOB!

  9. Lilly says:

    Hello every patient,
I want us to sue the company that makes Gabapentin. This drug has caused me enormous pain and suffering. Can we form a team and sue as group? I am ready to to a plaintiff. How can they market it as non addictive and the minute one wants to get stop they develop withdrawal symptoms? It has so many flaws and now I realize it is a snake oil.
