(Sept. 30, 2021)

More than 325,000 Generac portable generators have been recalled by the company after reports that an unlocked handle can pinch consumers’ fingers, resulting in several amputations and one crushed finger so far.

Seven types of Generac portable generators are subject to the recall and the affected models can be found on the Consumer Protection Safety Commision (CPSC) announcement issued Thursday.

“The generators have gasoline-powered engines that are used to generate electricity for use as backup power. The portable generators have two-wheels and a single, U-shaped, two-grip, flip-up pin-lock handle to help move the generator,” states the recall notice.

The recalled Generac portable generators were sold at major home improvement stores, including Ace Hardware, Amazon, Blain’s Farm & Fleet, City Electric Supply, Costco, Do it Best, Fastenal, Home Depot, Lowe’s Stores, Napa Auto Parts, Northern Tool & Equipment, Orgill, Power Equipment Direct, Ravitsky Bros., True Value, and W.W. Grainger, as well as online between June 2013 and June 2021. They retailed for between $790 and $1,480.

Consumers can also look up their specific unit on the company’s website to see if their generator is subject to the recall.

CPSC warns that consumers should stop using the recalled Generac portable generators if the handle remains unsecured and contact the company for a free repair kit.

Seven people have required finger amputations and one consumer’s finger was crushed by the recalled Generac portable generators, according to reports submitted to the company, says CPSC.

Top Class Actions will continue to monitor this and other safety recalls to help keep consumers informed.
