UPDATE
- Johnson & Johnson faces a class action lawsuit in California federal court filed the same day as the recall by consumers seeking to represent a nationwide Class of those who purchased Aveeno and Neutrogenga sunscreens allegedly tainted with benzene.
Johnson & Johnson is recalling five Neutrogena and Aveeno brand spray sunscreens, saying the products contain a chemical that causes cancers like leukemia.
The news comes after the company was hit with multiple class action lawsuits over the presence of benzene in its products.
Johnson & Johnson issued the recall Wednesday, saying internal testing had revealed several of its sunscreens contain “low levels” of benzene in some samples, Reuters reported.
Benzene is a chemical used mainly as a starting material for plastics, lubricants, rubbers, dyes, detergents, drugs, and pesticides, according to the American Cancer Society.
It’s a natural part of crude oil and gasoline, motor vehicle exhaust and cigarette smoke. The link between benzene and cancer has largely focused on leukemia and other cancers of blood cells.
The recalled sunscreens are Neutrogena Beach Defense, Neutrogena Cool Dry Sport, Neutrogena Invisible Daily defense, Neutrogena Ultra Sheer, and Aveeno Protect + Refresh.
Johnson & Johnson is telling distributors and retailers to stop selling the products. It says benzene is not an ingredient in its products and it is investigating the cause of the contamination.
“Daily exposure to benzene in these aerosol sunscreen products at the levels detected in our testing would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences,” the company said.
The recall comes just weeks after Neutrogena Corporation was hit with a nationwide class action lawsuit over claims its products contain benzene.
The complaint is one of a flood of class actions coming after independent testing done on a range of sunscreens by online pharmacy Valisure.
According to the class action lawsuit, Valisure tested Neutrogena’s products and found benzene present in quantities above the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s concentration limit of two parts per million, with some products containing nearly seven parts per million.
Earlier in June, another plaintiff filed a class action lawsuit in Florida, alleging Neutrogena and parent company Johnson & Johnson knowingly produce and sell sunscreens that contain benzene.
That class action includes all states except for California, and alleges that Neutrogena and Johnson & Johnson violated state and federal laws by not disclosing benzene on sunscreen labels.
Another recent class action takes aim at Banana Boat sunscreens, saying they contain benzene, but the company doesn’t advise consumers and won’t take it off shelves.
