apply for Social Security disability benefits online or by calling a toll freExtensive information and documentation is needed to apply for Social Security Disability.

Applying for Social Security disability benefits can be a complicated or even intimidating process. People can apply for Social Security disability benefits online or by calling a toll free number, although extensive information and documentation is needed.

What are Social Security Disability Benefits?

Social Security disability benefits pay individuals, and sometimes their family members, because they are unable work. Benefits vary from person to person, so there is no guarantee how much someone will receive in disability benefits, or if they will be able to receive any benefits at all.

Social Security considers a person disabled if they cannot do the work they did before becoming disabled. The Social Security Administration must make a determination that the person cannot adjust work to compensate for a condition, and the disability has lasted, or is expected to last, for a year or result in death.

Happily, Social Security benefits, including disability benefits, were increased in 2022 by 5.9%, in what AS calls a “historic increase.” Benefits were reportedly raised in order to keep up with the rising costs of living in the United States.

Who Qualifies for Social Security Disability Benefits?

People can apply for Social Security disability benefits if they:

  • Are 18 years of age or older
  • Are not receiving Social Security benefits
  • Are unable to work because of a medical condition that will last at least a full year or will result in death (condition must meet Social Security’s definition of disability)
  • Have not been denied disability benefits in the last 60 days
  • Worked in a job covered by Social Security

The amount of Social Security disability each person is eligible to receive depends on how many work credits they have. Work credits change from year to year, but in 2022, workers can earn one credit for each $1,510 in wages or self-employment income earned. You can earn up to four work credits in a year, meaning that workers must earn $6,040 to get the maximum four credits. Generally, people need 40 credits to qualify for disability benefits.

How to Apply for Social Security Disability Benefits?

According to the Social Security Administration, people should apply for disability benefits as soon as they become disabled. There are applications online or people can call 1-800-772-1213.

The following information is needed for an application:

  • Place and date of birth
  • Marriage and divorce information
  • Names and dates of birth for certain children (disabled prior to turning 22, under 18 and unmarried, or ages 18-19 and attending secondary school)
  • Any U.S. military service information
  • Employment and/or self-employment details
  • Direct deposit information
  • Alternate contact info
  • Medical details
    • Doctors, healthcare professionals, hospitals, and clinics seen (dates, treatments, tests, medications, etc.)
    • Information about other medical records (workers’ compensation, welfare, prison/jail, etc.)
    • Job history (how medical condition affects working ability, types of jobs held, etc.)
    • Education (high school, college, etc.) and training (trade school, special job training, vocational school, etc.)

Various documents may be required to support this information, including birth certificate, proof of citizenship, military discharge papers, W-2 forms, medical evidence, award letters, pay stubs, settlement agreements, and more.

If an application is denied, not all hope is lost: there are several levels of appeal that people can file for. If the application is denied for medical reasons, online forms may be needed. If the application is denied for non-medical reasons, you will likely need to call the Social Security Administration or contact the local Social Security Office for more information.
