Ulta Employees Class Action Lawsuit Overview:
- Who: A former Ulta employee lodged a class action lawsuit against the beauty retailer.
- Why: The plaintiff alleges Ulta failed to rightfully compensate for overtime, sick leave, and breaks.

A former Ulta employee is suing the beauty retailer for violating several labor laws by failing to pay certain employees for overtime, sick pay and missed break premiums, denying employees meal and break times, and furnishing inaccurate pay statements.
The lead plaintiff, Dorcas-Cothy Kabasele, worked for Ulta as an hourly, non-exempt employee from June 2019 through March 2021 in San Ramon, Calif. During this time, Kabasele and other Ulta employees were allegedly inaccurately compensated and denied meal and rest breaks as required by labor laws.
Kabasele represents herself and several specific classes that include all current and former non-exempt Ulta employees who faced similar labor violations by Ulta from September 10, 2018 through the date of final judgment.
Ulta Labor Practices Shortchange Employees
Over the past four years, Ulta regularly paid its non-exempt employees less than what must be paid as laid out in overtime and sick leave laws, according to the class action lawsuit. Ulta also allegedly prevented employees from taking their meal and break times due to understaffing and work demands. Ulta then either did not pay employees the premiums they were owed for working through those breaks, or paid a premium at an incorrect, lesser rate.
Further, Ulta furnished inaccurate wage statements to Kabasele and other employees, listing net pay as $0.00 during pay periods in which Ulta allegedly violated labor laws with their payment structures.
Ulta has also failed to pay Kabalese and other Class Members their earned but unpaid wages once those employees stopped working at Ulta.
Ulta’s willfully and intentionally unlawful practices have caused Kabalese and others injury, the class action lawsuit claims. They seek the payment of damages, penalties, liquidated damages, and attorneys’ costs.
This is not the first time Ulta employees have filed a class action lawsuit against the beauty retailer claiming the company shorted them. Indeed, in 2016, the company paid $3.65 million to California Ulta employees to end allegations of labor law violations.
Ulta has also been accused of reselling used makeup by consumers who filed a class action against the company in 2018.

How do I file one against sally beauty? They did the same vile things!
I worked for Ulta briefly after witnessing everything that is mentioned above. I even said to my manager on numerous occasions that it was against health code to resell the returned products. She would just shrug and say “it’s not my problem” I am a MUA and never have witnessed such horrible business practice in the industry. They mistreat thier employees and are extremely unsanitary with thier practice and sample station care. I worked there for 3 months and quit after I was denied breaks, and got in trouble numerous times for throwing out “makeup that could have been resold” Add me to this plz! Glad to see more are speaking up about this place.

I worked for the company in Texas and I had some similar issues and I was a manager.
I witnessed the selling of used makeup. They also touch up the used makeup to make it look new.
I’m a long time Ulta store customer. I spend at least 1000 dll a year with them. Disgusting that they do the kind of stuff in their store. Gross. Add me please
Ulta is has the most discriminating place. The store managers team up with the friends employee and give you hard time. I end up in hospital because of stress I went through at Ulta . I worked at Algonquin in chicago. They would not give you break if you go back and they get clients they make you go and take care of them. They do sell return makeup and tools. It’s all about store numbers they care. I liked the co but the stores are the worst. Even client come at the salon knew how bad it is. I wish I record all the dates and names I would have file a law suite for discrimination for sure.I am glad some one stud up against this big corporate.
