Stone Academy class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: A class action lawsuit is expected to be filed this week against now-closed Stone Academy by a group of its former students.
  • Why: The students claim Stone Academy, a nursing school, deceived them about the quality of its programs and misled them about its ultimate closure.
  • Where: Stone Academy was in West Haven, Connecticut.
  • What are my options: Udemy offers many online learning options.

A class action lawsuit is expected to be filed next week against Stone Academy over claims the West Haven, Connecticut, nursing school injured its students when it suddenly shut down in February.

An all-women group of students claim Stone Academy, its owners and trustees, and the CEO of the school deceived students about the legitimacy of the courses it offered and misled them — possibly for months — about its upcoming closure, the Connecticut Mirror reports

The defendants are also reportedly accused of failing to deliver the education promised to students when they signed up to attend the school offering licensed practical nurse and registered nurse courses.

The proposed class action lawsuit will be filed on behalf of a class of students who attended Stone Academy between 2018 and when it was abruptly shuttered Feb. 16, the Connecticut Mirror reports.

It is speculated there may be more than 1,000 students who were affected by the closure of Stone Academy, according to the Connecticut Mirror. An audit of the for-profit school ordered by the Office of Higher Education is scrutinizing the closure.

Stone Academy shut down amidst questions about its curriculum, faculty qualifications, exam passage rates

The nursing school reportedly shut down amid concerns about the qualifications of its faculty, exam passage rates and its clinical training requirements, while 850 students are now unable to acquire their transcripts while the audit is completed.

The audit is also reportedly looking at Stone Academy’s program and clinical hours for anyone who had been enrolled at either of the school’s three campuses from between November 2021 and when it was closed.

Students who already graduated from the nursing school, passed state exams and had already been working during that time, meanwhile, have reportedly been asked to enter into an agreement with the Department of Public Health that requires them to complete a “refresher course.”

Stone Academy and its co-defendants are accused of unjust enrichment, breach of contract and breach of implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing, and of violating the Connecticut Unfair Trade Practices Act, according to the Connecticut Mirror.

Plaintiffs are demanding a jury trial and seeking an award of compensatory and consequential damages for themselves and all class members.

In another case involving education, the University of Southern California agreed to pay $13.05 million earlier this year to end claims the university mismanaged retirement plans it offered to its faculty and staff.

Yes I did and I currently have student loan on my credit report because of them I high should have been instantly removed upon the discovery that the school wasn’t accredited. I’m suffering because of this student loan as I can’t get a good enough loan to purchase a home. I can’t believe I wasted my time with Stone when I could have invested elsewhere.
