Consumers could benefit from a $7.2 million lawsuit settlement between the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and HomeAdvisor resolving claims that the home project platform duped contractors and small businesses.

Refunds are available to anyone who was charged for a mHelpDesk membership and received a refund notification from the FTC.

According to the FTC, HomeAdvisor used false and misleading claims that it could provide high-quality, genuinely sourced leads for home service providers. The company allegedly used these claims to dupe contractors and other small businesses into paying for memberships for HomeAdvisor and mHelpDesk, an optional HomeAdvisor service.

HomeAdvisor is a platform that purportedly connects homeowners and professionals to accomplish home improvement tasks.

HomeAdvisor agreed to a $7.2 million settlement to resolve the FTC lawsuit. Of this amount, $3 million is being returned to 110,372 businesses that paid for HomeAdvisor memberships; 91,273 businesses that paid for a mHelpDesk membership can file a claim to receive an additional payment of $59.99.

There is no exclusion or objection deadline for the FTC settlement.

The settlement was finalized April 21, 2023.

In order to receive refunds under the FTC settlement, businesses that received a letter or email with a claim number must submit a valid claim form by Feb. 26, 2024.
