Gannett newspaper renewal class action lawsuit overview:
- Who: Nichole Anderson filed a class action lawsuit against Gannett Co., Inc.
- Why: Anderson claims Gannett unlawfully renews newspaper subscriptions for consumers who have already canceled their subscription.
- Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in New Jersey federal court.
Gannett deceptively and unlawfully automatically renews the newspaper subscriptions of consumers who have already canceled their subscriptions, a new class action lawsuit alleges.
Plaintiff Nichole Anderson claims Gannett acts in a “fraudulent” and “unconscionable” manner by allegedly continuing to charge consumers for their subscriptions even if they are canceled before they are set to renew.
Anderson argues that Gannett breaches its contract with consumers by allegedly continuing to charge for newspaper subscriptions that have been canceled.
“Defendant routinely fails to honor consumers’ requests to stop their newspaper subscriptions from automatically renewing and instead, continues to charge them subscription fees without their authorization in breach of the express terms of its contract,” the Gannett class action states.
Gannett class action alleges breach of contract, unjust enrichment
Anderson’s subscription to the Courier News was automatically renewed despite her canceling the subscription and receiving confirmation that it was done, the Gannett class action states.
“As a result of Defendant’s fraudulent conduct, Plaintiff paid nearly $10.00 in unauthorized charges from Defendant,” according to the Gannett newspaper renewal lawsuit.
Anderson claims Gannett is guilty of unjust enrichment and breach of contract and in violation of the Electronic Fund Transfer Act and New Jersey’s Consumer Fraud Act.
She demands a jury trial and requests declaratory and injunctive relief along with an award of compensatory, statutory and punitive damages for herself and all class members.
Anderson wants to represent a nationwide class of consumers who continued to be charged for a Gannett-owned newspaper subscription despite already having canceled their subscription to that newspaper.
Additionally, she wants to represent a subclass of consumers who purchased a subscription to the Courier News and who were continued to be charged after they canceled their subscription.
In related news, last month, a judge ruled that a $6.7 million class action settlement between The Washington Post and consumers who say their subscriptions were unlawfully automatically renewed could move forward.

My mother has been charged multiple times, for amounts as high as $91 a month for the Palm Beach Post that she has not received for over 6 months. We cancelled in November or 2024 yet my mother was still charged.
I need to join this Class Action lawsuit as I have been billed, now for the fifth straight month at $14.99 even though I have a document from Gannett confirming my cancellation to the Desert Sun newspaper. I filed disputes with my credit card company and they reversed the charges. I should not have to do this every month. I would like to be contacted by the law firm filing this suit.
This just happened to me. I’ve contacted them but they have not refunded me. I’ve cancelled my card, am refuting the charges through my bank, and made a complaint with the BBB.
This absolutely just happened to me. I guess I signed up for a trial period 6 months ago and they just took the auto-renewal fee of $19.99. Ive had other websites do this and they are more than willing to give back a refund and these people are not at all and I live in NY, never once having looked at the paper. I know the newspaper business is floundering and at the time im assuming was just trying to help a company. That’s on me for not doing my due diligence in that area but his company are scumbags and should be taken to court. This is a horrible precedent set by this company if every website did it and refused refunds then shopping for anything on the internet will disintegrate along with Detroit News. They are obviously a hyper ignorant companybnot understanding the fragility of whst they are doing and how bad it could be for them in the end….
…and now i have to file for fraud charges to my bank which is fraud on my end but have no other recourse to get my money back and I live paycheck to pay check. That 19.99 on any given week could make or break me, which i understand that’s a problem but it’s not okay for any multi-million/billion dollar company that we, the people, fund to not give us back a refund for a subscription to person in another state!! It’s disgusting what this country and world is coming to, it really is. Keep docile people, it’ll get better (complete sarcasm). Let’s stand up to these companies and do something! We have the power. Together WE have the power, not them! Quit being okay with just enough while these people own land and homes in the most beautiful parts of the world while we can barely get enough to eat during the week. Its our responsibility to do something about it, not theirs! Let’s take some semblance of our country back before it’s gone all together!!
