A $4.9 million settlement has been reached which will resolve a Synapse magazine auto renewal class action lawsuit.

Californians who were enrolled by Synapse in an automatic renewal magazine subscription program between May 17, 2012 and Oct. 8, 2018, could get cash from this settlement.

Lead plaintiffs accused the Synapse Group of perpetuating a deceptive automatic renewal scheme that charged consumers’ credit and debit cards without their knowledge or consent.

According to the Synapse class action lawsuit, consumers were not presented with the terms of the Synapse magazine auto renewal policy in a clear and conspicuous manner.

The Synapse magazine class action lawsuit claimed that both the sign up and cancellation process for the auto renewal service were deceptive.

The plaintiffs say they were not informed that by purchasing magazines using the company’s website, they would be automatically enrolled in a subscription to those magazines.

Further, the cancellation process was not straightforward, contended the plaintiffs. They alleged that the cancellation process was not timely, economical, or easy to use.

The plaintiffs argued that by auto renewing Synapse magazine subscriptions, the company violated California’s Automatic Renewal Law.

Synapse Group agreed to pay nearly $5 million to end the auto renewal class action lawsuit. In addition, the company has agreed to change its auto renewal policies to more clearly define the terms and cancellation procedures.
