Starbucks Pride policy overview:

  • Who: Starbucks announced in an open letter on Monday that it will be clarifying its policy on Pride Month celebration decorations at its store locations.
  • Why: The letter is in response to criticism and worker strikes over claims Starbucks restricted Pride decorations at some of its locations.
  • Where: Starbucks has locations nationwide.

Starbucks has announced that it will be clarifying its policy on Pride decorations at its store locations, after workers from more than 60 of its unionized stores have chosen to go on strike over a dispute about the policy.

In an open letter, the multinational coffeehouse chain said it will look to its Period Planning Kit and Siren’s Eye program — which are distributed several times a year — as guidance for how to appropriately handle seasonal signage and display guidelines

“We intend to issue clearer centralized guidelines… for in-store visual displays and decorations that will continue to represent inclusivity and our brand,” Sara Trilling, president of Starbucks North America, wrote in an open letter Monday.

Starbucks Workers United, which represents the striking Starbucks workers, argued earlier this month that the company had restricted Pride Month celebration decor at stores in certain states, reports CNN

Starbucks denies claims it restricted Pride celebration decorations at store locations

Starbucks has denied the allegations, calling them “an unlawful smear campaign that includes making maliciously and recklessly false statements,” about its “longstanding corporate policy allowing Pride decorations in its stores.”

The company — which reiterated its support of the LGBTQIA2+ community — also  argued Starbucks Workers United was making false statements about gender affirming care benefits it says it offers to its workers.

“I want to reiterate that there has been no change to any of our policies as it relates to our inclusive store environments, our company culture, and the benefits we offer our partners,” Trilling wrote, in Monday’s letter.

Starbucks, when first presented with claims it was restricting Pride decorations, said that store leaders at each of its individual locations are able to decorate them as they wish, so long as they adhere to safety guidelines, reports CNN.

Starbucks Workers United reportedly said it expects workers from more than 150 unionized locations to go on strike by the end of this week.

Last month, a consumer who argued Starbucks misleadingly represents the contents of its French Roast Ground 100% Arabica Coffee product fought the company’s bid to have the claims dismissed in a New York federal court.
