According to attorneys from the Aloha State, large damage awards have prompted consumers from the islands to start working on their own Roundup cancer lawsuits. One attorney reportedly has six or seven more lawsuits to file within the next few weeks while another lawyer has an additional 25 clients ready to take legal action.

Although Roundup cancer lawsuits are just starting to gain speed in Hawaii courts, Monsanto and parent company Bayer face thousands of similar Roundup cancer claims on the mainland. Many Roundup cancer lawsuits claim that the pesticide’s active ingredient glyphosate can lead to cancer, most often non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a sub-unit of the United Nation’s World Health Organization, has classified glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen. However, other organizations, such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) argue that the chemical is non-carcinogenic. The question of glyphosate safety is often argued in Roundup cancer lawsuits.

So far, many of the lawsuits that have gone to trial in California court have resulted in favorable outcomes for plaintiffs.

Roundup Verdicts

The first favorable trial verdict came in August 2018. The jury determined that Roundup had played a role in plaintiff Dewayne J.’s non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and awarded the man $289 million. Dewayne reportedly worked as a groundskeeper before being diagnosed with cancer in 2014 and routinely sprayed Ranger Pro, a high concentration version of Roundup, during his employment.

In March 2019, a San Francisco jury awarded plaintiff Edwin H. $80 million after determining that Roundup use placed a role in his non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Edwin reportedly used Roundup on his 56 acre property for over twenty years and developed cancer in February 2015. This was the second trial verdict which found a connection between glyphosate and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

In May 2019, a jury in California state court awarded married couple Alva and Alberta P. a massive Roundup cancer lawsuit award of $2 billion. The husband and wife pair allegedly developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma within four years of each other after using Roundup for residential purposed for around 30 years.

Although Roundup cancer plaintiffs have seen favorable outcomes, Monsanto and Bayer continue to appeal jury awards which often results in decreased payout amounts. Dewayne’s $289 million award was reduced to $78 million. The husband-wife couple had their multi-billion dollar award cut to $86.7 million.

Bayer continues to argue against trial decisions and maintains that their products are safe and non-carcinogenic.

“We continue to believe that the verdict and damage awards are not supported by the evidence at trial and conflict with the extensive body of reliable science and conclusions of leading health regulators worldwide that confirms glyphosate-based herbicides can be used safely and that glyphosate is not carcinogenic,” Bayer told The Washington Post.

Consumers who developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma or another type of cancer after using the glyphosate pesticide may be able to file a Roundup cancer lawsuit. Legal action may help these individuals recover significant compensation for their illness. This money can help cover medical expenses and more.
