Several popular companies, retailers and manufacturers announced recalls last week for products that may pose injury to consumers. Here are Top Class Actions’ top recalls for the week of Nov. 6.

Children’s activity centers sold at Walmart recalled due to injury risk

Dorel Juvenile Group initiated a product recall affecting 115,700 units of its Cosco Jump, Spin and Play Activity Centers due to potential safety concerns. 

The straps on the activity centers can detach or break, posing a risk of falls and potential injuries. These activity centers, with model numbers WA105FZW and WA105GML, feature a circular hoop base and three poles, suspending a child seat with a play tray via three straps.

Dorel Juvenile Group received 141 reports of strap detachment or breakage, resulting in 38 incidents of minor injuries such as bumps, bruises and scratches. Potential salmonella contamination results in dog food recall

Mid America Pet Food issued a recall for three lots of its Victor Super Premium Dog Food, Select Beef Meal & Brown Rice Formula, as a precautionary measure due to potential salmonella contamination at its Mount Pleasant, Texas, production facility. A third party discovered the salmonella during random testing, prompting the recall. 

The affected products include lot no. 1000016890 for 5-pound bags, lot no. 1000016891 for 15-pound bags and lot no. 1000016892 for 40-pound bags, all sharing a best-by date of June 12, 2024. Consumers can find the lot code on the back of the bag.

Salmonella in pets can manifest as lethargy, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting, while humans may experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. 

Mid America Pet Food says it has not received any reports of illness in either humans or pets.

Honda recalls Civics due to incorrectly assembled power steering rack

Honda Motor Co. announced a recall affecting more than 176,000 of its 2022-2024 Honda Civic four- and five-door vehicles, citing concerns that an incorrectly assembled replacement power steering rack was installed during service repairs. 

The company says the replacement steering racks in the recalled Honda Civic vehicles may lead to the tire chafing against the lower suspension or tie rod end, potentially resulting in tire damage. Such damage could pose a significant risk, as a compromised tire could fail, increasing the likelihood of a crash or injury. 

To address the issue, Honda says it plans to conduct inspections and replace the electric power steering racks on the affected Honda Civic vehicles at its dealerships. This service will be free of charge to owners, and the company anticipates sending recall notification letters to affected vehicle owners starting on Dec. 4, 2023.

Toyota announces recall for Highlanders due to potential bumper defect

Toyota issued a voluntary recall for 751,000 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid vehicles due to a potential defect in the front lower bumper mounting tabs, which may cause the bumper to dislodge after a minor impact. This issue poses a crash hazard, as the mounting tabs could detach, leading to safety concerns. 

To address the problem, Toyota technicians will assess the tabs and slots for damage on the front bumper cover, and if no harm is detected, they will enhance the design with improved retention hardware and replace both the lower and upper bumper covers. In cases where damage is identified, technicians will install new hardware. All repairs will be conducted free of charge to the vehicle owners.

Toyota plans to notify owners of the impacted vehicles before late December. 

Potential salmonella, E. coli contamination leads to Future Seafoods oysters recall

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a recall for all oysters harvested Oct. 10 at Area PE9B by Future Seafoods Inc. due to potential contamination with salmonella and unacceptable levels of E. coli. 

Future Seafoods distributed the affected oysters to customers Oct. 10-16, affecting restaurants and retailers in several states, including Florida, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Virginia. 

Salmonella infection symptoms typically manifest within 12 to 72 hours, with an average duration of four to seven days. The consumption of food or water contaminated with E. coli can lead to varying degrees of gastrointestinal illness, ranging from mild to severe. 

The FDA urges consumers not to consume oysters from Future Seafoods Inc. and requested restaurants and food retailers in the affected states to refrain from selling these products.
