Lidocaine aprepitant recall overview:

  • Who: Sandoz initiated a recall alert for more than 150,000 aprepitant capsules and lidocaine and prilocaine cream prescription drugs.
  • Why: The packaging of the products is not child-resistant.
  • Where: The recall is active in the United States.

Sandoz initiated a recall alert for more than 150,000 aprepitant capsules and lidocaine and prilocaine cream prescription drugs as the products’ packaging is not child-resistant.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website posted the recall March 9. It applies to aprepitant 125 mg capsules sold in cartons containing one blister card of six capsules and 5-gram tubes of lidocaine and prilocaine cream sold in cartons containing five tubes and packed with or without 12 dressings. Consumers can find specific lot numbers listed here.

About 156,750 product packages are affected, the company says.

According to the lidocaine and aprepitant recall, the recalled prescription drugs and products that contain lidocaine must be in child-resistant packaging as required by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA).

“The packaging of the products is not child-resistant, posing a risk of poisoning if the contents are swallowed by young children,” Sandoz says.

No injuries have been reported. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Store products out of reach of children, lidocaine, aprepitant recall says

Consumers should immediately secure the medications out of the sight and reach of children and contact Sandoz for a free child-resistant pouch to store the products, the company says.

Once the medication is secured, consumers can continue to use it as directed.

Sandoz sold the products at pharmacies nationwide as a prescribed medicine from Oct. 2020 through Jan. 2023. The prices of the medications varied based on health insurance terms and other factors, the lidocaine and aprepitant recall says.

In related news, several retailers have been hit with class actions over lidocaine patches. In November, for example, consumers filed a class action lawsuit against Stop & Shop, alleging its CareOne lidocaine patches promise pain relief for up to eight hours but can fall off within minutes.
