Recall Check: Razor Hoverboard Battery Packs Recalled Due to Fire Risk

Razor Recall Overview:

• Why: The GLW battery packs were determined to be a fire hazard.

Razor USA issued a recall on Wednesday for around 237,000 GLW battery packs used to power its Hovertrax 2.0 Self-Balancing Scooters/Hoverboards, after determining they posed a fire hazard.  

GLW’s removable lithium ion battery packs can overheat and make the Razor-brand hoverboard start smoking and potentially catch fire or explode, says Razor. 

Razor says it received more than 20 reports of the GLW battery-powered Hovertrax 2.0 Self-Balancing Scooters/Hoverboards overheating, including “some reports of smoke or fire.” No injuries have been reported, says the company.

Stop Using Recalled Razor Hoverboard

Consumers should immediately stop using the self-balancing Razor hoverboard and contact the company for information on how to receive a replacement battery pack at no cost, says Razor, which will provide a prepaid shipping container to return the defective GLW battery packs.

The GLW battery packs were installed in Hovertrax 2.0 Self-Balancing Scooters/Hoverboards manufactured between September 2016 and August 2017. The Razor hoverboard was sold at retail stores nationwide, including Walmart, Target, and Toys R’ Us, and online at Walmart.com, Amazon.com and other websites from September 2016-18 for around $460. 

The Razor hoverboard battery packs are emblazoned with the name GLW and have serial numbers beginning with GLW. The serial number is located on a white sticker on the front of the battery pack, below the car code. 

The affected Razor hoverboard was sold in black, black monochrome, blue, ocean blue, green, white, rose gold, red, red monochrome, purple colors, ocean blue, and three multicolor patterns the company Razor called Galaxy, Spectrum, and Carbon. 

Amazon issued a similar nationwide recall earlier this week after determining two of its exclusive rugs did not meet federal flammability standards and posed a fire risk.
