A nationwide laxative recall has been expanded for a second time, with more than 50 laxatives sold under various brand names at major pharmacies now named in the recall, after three reports of adverse reactions.

On June 22, Vi-Jon LLC, based in Smyrna, Tennessee, announced the first recall for one lot of CVS Magnesium Citrate Saline Laxative Oral Solution Lemon Flavor on the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) website.

The affected lot of the product was found to contain the bacteria Gluconacetobacter liquefaciens, which can increase the risk of invasive infections for immunocompromised people — infections that could lead to serious, life-threatening adverse health consequences, the FDA said.

The recall has since been expanded twice, after three reports of people becoming sick.

Recall expanded twice in one month

The recall was first expanded July 15 to include all lots of Magnesium Citrate Saline Laxative Oral Solution Lemon Flavor sold under multiple brands including Walgreens, Rite Aid and Kroger brands.

The second expanded recall was posted to the FDA website July 25, and now includes 53 products in total, including all lots of cherry- and grape-flavor Magnesium Citrate Saline Laxative Oral Solution, 10-ounce size, sold under various brand names. The full list of recalled products can be seen on the FDA’s website

As of the third recall, Vi-Jon said it had become aware of three reports of “serious adverse reactions” potentially related to the products.

“Vi-Jon, LLC is in the process of investigating these reports,” the FDA noice says.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Vi-Jon said it is notifying its customers by phone and email and is arranging for return or destruction of all recalled products.

“Consumers that have this recalled product should stop using and return any remaining product to the place of purchase,” it said.

I HAVE USED THIS PRODUCT FOR SEVERAL COLONOSCOPIES BECAUSE MY DOCTOR RECOMMENDED IT AS A CLEANSE AND BECAUSE IT DID WORK I HAVE USED IT ON A REGULAR ANYTIME I AM CONSTIPATED AND FEELING BLOATED. THE LAST FEW TIMES I USED IT IT MADE ME SICK TO MY STOMACH BUT I JUST THOUGHT IT WAS HOW I WAS SUPPORTED TO REACT TO THE PRODUCT BECAUSE SOMETIMES IT DID UPSET MY STOMACH BEFORE I HAD A BOWEL MOVEMENT. ARE THERE ANY LONG-TERM PROBLEMS WITH THIS PRODUCT?

I have two bottles in bathroom closet right now. Will return to seller. Did not know of the recall until I read it here. Please add me.

I have been taking the grape and lemon magnesium citrate on and off for more than 15 years. Even though I buy the product regularly, I wasn’t notified of the recall. My husband heard something in the news and alerted me to it. I tried to communicate with Vi-Jon, LLC via email but received an “undeliverable” message. Please add me to the list.

  5. Jean Krieg says:

I have had stomach issue since I took it before my colonoscopy. Vi-Jon did not respond to my email.

  6. Christle says:

I didn’t know about this until now. This explains why my abdomen has been weirdly sore and volatile for the last couple of weeks. Info please.

I have been sick since consuming this product July 19th. I have not worked since due to constant nausea. I reached out to the company but was given the runaround. They provided me with a case number and sent me on my way. I emailed them again this morning, and I was sent an automatic reply giving me faqs that are obviously known by most consumers.
Sign me up and please let me know what I should do.
I’m tired of this company ignoring what we
    have a right to know.

The PROOF is in actually testing positive for this specific bacteria. I would say get tested then you will know if your symptoms are caused by this specific bacteria ( or NOT).

    1. Randall Nielsen says:

      How do I get tested?
I’m immunocompromised and just drank an entire bottle this afternoon

    2. Heather says:

Doctors, labs, and Vi-Jon say they don’t know how to test for this microbe! And even if they did, they say they don’t know how to treat it! If you have any knowledge about testing and/or treating Gluconacetobacter liquefaciens, PLEASE ADVISE!! Thank you.
