Del Maguey recalls mezcal copitas due to lead exposure risk

Del Maguey is recalling its ceramic clay cups, called copitas, which are used for drinking mezcal, because the cups may contain more than the Food and Drug Association’s recommended amount of leachable lead.

The Del Maguey recall, posted by the FDA, says the copitas were given away in promotions across the United States at retail locations, events and tastings. They have also been sold in Value Added Packs since October 2022 along with a 750ml bottle of Del Maguey Vida de Muertos mezcal and four copitas.

The red clay cups, with enamel on the surface, hold one ounce of mezcal and measure 2.5 inches wide and 1 inch in height. The copitas include the words “Del Maguey Single Village Mezcal” which encircles the word “Mexico” on the inside of the cup.

Consumers should stop using the copitas and throw them away, Del Maguey recall says

Del Maguey says it has not received any reports of illness related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
