  • Who: Conagra Brands recalled more than 1,200 tons of canned meat and poultry products.
  • Why: A packaging defect can cause contamination.
  • Where: The canned meat and poultry recall is active nationwide.

Conagra Brands recalled more than 1,200 tons of canned meat and poultry products nationwide due to a packaging defect that can cause contamination.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) website published the recall on Jan. 31.

It applies to more than 50 canned meat and poultry products sold under various brands, including Armour Star, Goya and Great Value. Consumers can view a full list of affected products on this spreadsheet.

According to the canned poultry and meat recall notice, Conagra produced the affected products between Dec. 12, 2022, and Jan. 13, 2023. The products subject to recall bear establishment number “P4247” on the product cans and were shipped to retail locations nationwide.

The approximately 2,581,816 pounds (1,291 tons) of recalled canned meat and poultry products are potentially unsafe due to a packaging defect that may cause the products to become contaminated without showing any outward signs of contamination, the FSIS says.

Conagra noticed leaking cans at its warehouse, canned poultry, meat recall says

FSIS initiated the recall after Conagra notified the service that it noticed spoiled and leaking cans from multiple production dates at its warehouse.

“Subsequent investigation by the establishment determined that the cans subject to recall may have been damaged in a manner that is not readily apparent to consumers, which may allow foodborne pathogens to enter the cans,” the canned poultry and meat recall says.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products so far, the company says. Conagra is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

“Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them,” the FSIS says. “These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”

In other Conagra news, in September, consumers hit the company with a class action lawsuit alleging its Log Cabin pancake mix is falsely advertised as natural and a good source of fiber.
