General Motors has recalled more than 13,000 Chevrolet Corvettes as the seatbelts can become locked, rendering them useless.
The Chevrolet Corvette recall was published on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website on June 6. It applies to 13,464 model year 2024/5 Corvettes.
According to the recall, these vehicles may contain a driver or passenger seat belt retractor that, under certain conditions, can become locked while in a stowed position.
“Occupants who travel without a properly functioning seatbelt have an increased risk of injury if the vehicle is involved in a crash,” the recall says.
General Motors says the cause of the issue is that two internal components of the seatbelt retractor may be “slightly out of dimensional specifications.” If this happens, the seatbelt can get locked in the stowed position, it says.
Replacement offered for affected drivers
To fix the issue, dealers will replace the seatbelt retractors as needed, the company says. All affected vehicles are under warranty, so reimbursement is not offered, General Motors says.
Owners will be notified beginning July 22, 2024.
Meanwhile, consumers have recently filed class action lawsuits against General Motors over claims involving alleged vehicle defects, unlawful data collection and sharing and hackable key fobs.
GM also recently expanded a recal over concerns certain GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado vehicles contain tailgates that can inadvertently unlatch while the vehicle is parked.
