man using pole saw to trim tree

An important alert for those looking to get some do-it-yourself tree trimming done in the yard: there is a recent recall on three product lines of chain saws.

Both Black and Decker and Fiskars are alerting buyers of a chainsaw recall over defects that could lead to injuries.

The chainsaw recall involves more than 550,000 chain saws from these companies sold nationwide, according to USA Today.

Black and Decker Pole Saw

Specifically, the Black and Decker’s Craftsman model CMECSP610 10-inch corded chainsaws with extension poles is being recalled

About 82,000 have already been sold throughout the United States in various improvement stores, including Lowe’s and Home Depot, between October 2019 and August 2020, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The alert was published Dec. 9.

The Black and Decker pole saws, retailing for about $100, are red and black and are accented with gray. Craftsman is printed on the pole saw bar and on its motor.

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission is warning consumers not to use the Black and Decker pole saw because the device can start up without warning.

The agency warns issues with the pole saws have already caused lacerations to some who’ve used them. Those who bought a Black and Decker Craftsman pole saw should contact the company, which is offering free repair kits, before using again, the agency further advised in the alert.

While it remains unclear what’s causing the issue with Black and Decker pole saw, BGR.com reports it has been repeated enough to prompt the alert.

Black and Decker is headquartered in Towson, Maryland. The pole saw is made in China.

Consumers with this type of Craftsman pole saw can reach out to the Black and Decker customer service line at 855-237-6848, email chainsaw recall concerns to recall@sbdinc.com, or visit them online.

A chainsaw recall has been issued. Two Fiskar Pole Saws Recalled

Fiskar has issued a chainsaw recall on both their 16-foot “chain-drive” and “power lever” extendable pole saw and pruners.

An estimated 467,680 were sold in the United States, according to the chainsaw recall alert. Some 95,000 were also sold in Canada.

Two different incidents requiring stitches are being blamed on this problem and prompted the chainsaw recall.

The CPSC says the telescoping poles separate, leaving the blade unsecured which then can drop to the ground, risking serious injury.

The Fiskar pole saws extend up to 16 feet using this telescopic feature. The non-motorized device can’t be fixed and should be returned for a refund or destroyed, according to the recall alert.

Fiskar is headquartered in Middleton, Wisconsin and makes the recalled pole saw in Taiwan and China.

Consumers can call Fiskar’s customer service at 888-847-8716 or visit their product notification page online for more information.

Consumers can report incidents involving chainsaw recall products.

The Centers for Disease Control reports an average 36,000 people are sent each year to emergency rooms across the U.S. for chainsaw injuries.

A study on chainsaw-related emergency visits published by Hindawi showed a total of 115, 895 injuries were counted in five years. That study concluded an annual average of 139 amputations yearly from chainsaw injuries; 69% of those injuries were described as lacerations.

Most of these visits, according to the report, end up with treatment and release. Just under 4% required hospitalization.

Researchers say prevention of these injuries is challenging due to the home improvement nature of chainsaws in general.

“While occupational industry must comply with federal safety standards and training with respect to chain saw use, there are no regulations requiring training for persons who purchase a chain saw for personal use,” according to the study.

Canada has also been impacted by the Fiskars 16 Foot Extendable Pole Saw/Pruners recall.

I just called their 1-888-847-8716, and was told to go out side and break the pole and take a picture of it? What the hell is that, it’s a recall that they sent a notice to me, but they want me to buy a saw and ‘cut it in half’. So they want me to possible hurt myself in the process, to prove that it’s on recall. If it’s faulty then either replace it or refund my money or send the postage to return the product. What is wrong with companies these days that don’t stand by their products.
